the installation dvd stops at : microcode: microcode update driver: v2.00 <tigran@xxx.co.uk> peter oruba
and also the hardware check stops at some point and if a try the safe kernell get the error KERNEL PANIC
it’s my first try at installing linux so any help is very appreciated
The installation method you’re using… ie DVD? Network? LiveCD? other?
Possibly the hardware being used. So, for instance “normal” installation media won’t be able to install a kernel installing on ARM, you’ll need to install from special media.
Also, if you did try to install from DVD, you generally need to do a checksum to verify its integrity. I generally avoid this by downloading with a bit torrent client which will automatically checksum every piece and then the final file.
Also check the BIOS and see if it has a floppy drive marked as installed and active? If so disable that. There is a known bug if there is no floppy and the BIOS says thee is one. It causes a very very long hang
I downloaded the iso again and verifyied the checksum before burning a new dvd but I still get stuck at the same point as per my first post.
It’s a new system just put it togheter, everything is brand new, MB asus z97-a with uefi bios (can’t see any floppy drive there), cpu intel 4770k, vga nvidia gtx 750 ti, ssd samsung 250 evo, ram gskill f3-1600c9d-16gxm, wireless pcie tplink wdn4800, lg dvd rom drive, hdd hgst deskstar nas 4tb.
Most BIOS have a setup to say if there is a floppy or not somewhere. My understanding of the bug is that it will hang the system for a long time on the order of 10-15 min but it will eventually proceed. If the BIOS is saying there is a floppy but there is not one attached the bug is triggered. It is a kernel bug but appears to only show at installation. I believe that a patch does fix it but that is not help if bitten by it. It seems that a large number of systems ship with the floppy flag set even if not present
Be sure you boot the DVD in EFI mode if installing on a EFI system, That can confuse things also if the DVD boots in an old BIOS mode And it is best to turn secure boot off. If you check the secure boot box in the installer you can turn it back on after the install if you really want the thing
It is hard to tell from your description. But this could be a video driver problem.
I’m assuming that you are booting to UEFI mode. On the boot menu screen (where it lists options such as Installation), hit the “e” key. That should put you into an editor.
Scroll down till you find a “linux” line (or, probably, a “linuxefi” line). Then add “nomodeset” (without the quotes) to the end of the line. See if that helps.
What you see <just before> the problem… It will be the last successful thing you see. So, for instance “the kernel is loaded” several times during installation. The very first time the kernel loads is when your DVD runs and you should see a graphic of a big optical disk, languages and then you will see a menu displaying options like installation, memory test, disk source verification, more. Did you see at least this, or did your install already fail?
You need to try to describe exactly what you see when you believe “the kernel won’t load,” ie what makes you think this is a kernel problem and not something else? Did you see some kind of error message? What do you see on the screen?
If possible, take some pictures if you think it’d be helpful. You can use a phone, the upload to any place that will host your picture. Then post a link to that picture in your post here.
Needless to say, if this is also a home built system, then hardware problems can be builder-related. Has any other OS run on this system? Is the CPU seated properly and heat sink and thermal paste applied properly?
I did try to disable the secure boot but it made no difference, in the uefi bios don’t see any entry related to the floppy drive and with this mb don’t think the (normal) bios exist (only uefi), I did also try to run the installation in text only mode with the local acpi disabled mode and the installation stopped at this line :
>>> opensuse instalaltion program v4.1.5 etc… <<<<
Starting udev…
otherwise the last line I see is :
microcode: microcode update driver: v2.00 <tigran@xxx.co.uk> peter oruba
and stay there forever (I waited as long as one hour) what happens is I see the first screen with the welcome and the second where is the installation and various options and choose install, the kernell load starts ad right after that the black screen with the commands starts till the line that I mentioned before stops everything. with the new dvd I made it seems that at that point the dvd keeps spining for another minute or more and then stops and nothing happens anymore
it’s a home build system (by me) and win7 installed flawlessly (and still work ok but I need to move away from it to keep my sanity) also I just tryied to install the latest ubuntu (14.04 lts) and everything went smoothly and in 20 min. got it running and updated.
don’t know what to thing but maybe I’ll stay with ubunto for the time being till I can learn more about openSUSE and linux in genral and then try again (maybe on a vm)
thanks again all and if you have any other suggestion I can try I will as I’m planning to format everything and install only ubuntu and keep win7 in a vm to avoid the dual boot problems
