So I’ve got a box that I’ve recently flipped from being a dual boot XP/SUSE box to linux full time. The motherboard (an Asus M3A32-MVP) has an onboard 2-port Marvell RAID controller. Now, originally, I created a RAID1 array using the built-in RAID and I could never get SUSE to read it. I messed with the experimental Linux drivers but I could never get them to work right.
Now that it’s a full time Linux box, I’ve decided to just make a RAID1 using the YAST Partitioner. In the bios, I tried this with the drives set as both IDE and AHCI and get the same error. Both of the drives (Hitachi 750GB) are seen by the utility and there is nothing loaded on them. I can create singular partitions if I like. But if I go to the RAID tab and click “Add RAID,” it throws the error “there are not enough suitable unused devices to create a RAID.” Now when I go down to unused devices, I see both my drives there. Like I said, I’ve tried every setting in the bios I could find (IDE and AHCI mode is it) and it’s the same issue either way.
Am I missing something fundamental here, or is there some other quirk, possibly with my hardware?
