Heres what i did to get to this point. 3 fresh installs in 2 weeks from the cd i created on another computer. tried to get Mplayer working on the first 2 installs. Xfree86 crashed and i couldnt even get a gui so i had to get up and running and did a fresh install # 3. ITrying for 2 weeks to get MPLAYER, MPLAYER2 or VLC working. downloaded all of the dependencies that i thought i needed from many different sources and types of files including tar, .gz. rpm’s repositories etc… I put most all of the downloads in /usr/share and unpacked and unzipped things in /usr/share. theres a bunch of stuff in there now. I get all kinds of errors and dependency issues that wont allow vlc, mplayer, or mplayer2 to work. Seems like every file i downloaded needed some special technique or dependency that i could not figure out. some installed some didnt. I guess what i need is some advice on what to do now. should i delete the stuff i put in /usr/share?? how do i clean this mess up that i started. I have hundreds of programs and rpms that are in there and i would guess maybe 20 percent installed correctly. what do i do with the rest of them?? what do i do to get vlc running and clean everything up?? its rather overwhelming. been reading up on shared libraries, compilers and trying to figure out how to install a bunch of rpms at one time. i dont even know if rpms work on my system or i need to use repositories or tar files. its so darn confusing im pulling my hair out. Seems i always end up with a bunch of programs but theres so many that im afraid to just start deleting stuff in case i really screw it up. I did change all of the files in my X11 to read only because i feared i would lose my gui if i allowed it to have the read/ write capability. was this stupid?? is that why vlc wont run? if i change it back what files get read/write and what permissions and owners get what ??? see my dilems im just flat out confused. then if i run my gui as a user all of the time then i have trouble installing stuff. if i stay working in a root gui it seems easier but im afraid that ill mess things up. So in a nutshell its all a big confusing mess on what mode to operate in, what files to use for installing packages and trying to fix dependency issues while maintaining a organized computer. Does anyone else feel this way??? I will feel better now if someone feels the same way or did at some point.

First.
On another thread you said that you are using SLES
(SUSE-Linux-Enterprise-Server-11-SP2 11.2.2-1.234), thus you can not ask
questions here. This are the openSUSE forums, a different product.
Do not mix packages destined for openSUSE with packages for SLES. You’ll
break things.
As an SLES user you have the support you paid for. Use it.

You have probably voided the SLES warranty. You will have to install
fresh again and ask them for support. There is no way to clear that mess.
Hint: your installations should have gone to “/usr/local”.

Dear mikesmith317,
As you might have found out in the meantime, we are here at the openSUSE forums. We do not know much about SLED/SLES, but a few things are clear:
- We can not help you with SLES/SLED problems
- When you mix openSUSE software from openSUSE repos into your SLES/SLED system you will run in severe problems.
The fact that you post here endless stories without starting sentences with capital letters and without making any sections makes your posts almost unreadable. So my advice would be to add some layout to your posts when you go to the SLES/SLED forums.
Please do not start any more threads in these openSUSE forums about SLES/SLED problems. It is useless and spoils your and our time.
