help! installation of xxms and driver for wlan! im lost

hi,
im new to linux and i am really liking it (ok i admit i am a total noob to linux and i am not planning to be a total crack in it, i just want it to run smoothly and i know how to do the important stuff…) , exepted i am having some problems installing xmms and getting my wlan to work:’(.i am using openSuse 11.1

ok let s start with the xmms thing,

i tried pretty much anything, when i try to install it through the packman website with the auto installer it says that:

i googles the "GTK+ >=1.2.2 thing and did not get anywhere :frowning: i am really lost with that, and starting to get frustrated…

ok and now to the wlan, i am having "Broadcom 802.11 a/b/g/Wlan and I know that it is really easy to configure through the terminal, typing in some little commands and getting the firmware or something like that, but i did not find anywhere a guide how to do that, can anyone help me please?

Hi there—

XMMS: what you should do is to add the Packman repository to Yast before trying to install packages from Packman. So, go to Yast, click on Software Repositories, click the Add button, and “Specify URL” should be auto-selected for you. Click Next. Give the Repository a name, like, um, “Packman,” and then type in the URL in the URL window: the packman repository URL is Index of /suse/11.1 . Click Next, and then allow Yast to download the Repository manifest from Packman.

Also, try installing software from the Software Installation tool rather than the commandline. If you have correctly added the Packman repository, Software Install should be able to grab and install dependencies automatically for you.

I also have a Broadcom wireless card and have used fw-cutter before, but it’s been years. Once I extracted the firmware files, I made a back up of them and haven’t used fw-cutter since. But according to the website b43 - Linux Wireless , all you have to do in OpenSuse 11.1 is issue the following command: “sudo /usr/sbin/install_bcm43xx_firmware”.

After that, you’ll need to unload and and then re-load the b43 module, and wireless should work.

If module loading and unloading is too weird for you, just restart your computer and you should be able to use wireless after that.

thanks for your help!! it worked!! the use of packman to install stuff and my wireless! thanks so much, are there any other important repos like packman that should be added?
the only thing that was weird was. when i typed in the command for the wlan into the normal consol as a su it said “command not found” but when i did it over the su consol, i found it in the applaction list of gnome it worked, but i don’t really care as long as it works!!

your help was greatly appreciated , you solved a problem for i fiddled around with since ages…
