PS: I tried the installation on desktop

I don’t understand your problem. Please explain in more detail what you did and what is happening now.

For example I am making some huge guesses based on thephrases “mounted the image file” and “reboted the computer”.

My wild guess is that you had a desktop running windows and you mounted the DVD iso in windows and tried to install openSUSE from inside windows and it broke the windows bootloader.

Is it something like that? Or is it something else that you did?

John, I think you hit the nail on the head. Sounds like he may have run the installer in windows. Yikes.

Yup swerdna,:shame:You got it right . And the other problem is i don’t have a dvd-writer on my laptopto burn the image and use it or booting.

Well maybe you can get windows back this way – here’s a reference and here’s a quote from it, might help:

However if (windows) doesn’t (boot) because Grub code has lodged in the MBR you can easily replace it with Windows boot code and get back on track as follows:

 • Windows 2000/XP on the computer: Boot from the XP/2000 installation disk and proceed to the final screen where you have the option to Repair Your Computer. Press "R" for Repair and log onto the Windows installation. When the command prompt appears, enter the command fixmbr. Confirm "yes" and you will receive confirmation of the reinstallation of Windows bootstrap code into the MBR. Enter exit and the computer will reboot.
 • Windows Vista on the computer: Boot from the Vista installation disk and proceed to the final screen where you have the option to Repair Your Computer. Select Repair but do not opt for the automatic repair plus restart. Instead select Next and then select the Command Prompt. Enter bootrec.exe /FixMbr in the console and follow that with the command exit. Then select to reboot.
