I added the system monitor widget to my desktop, and don’t know why there are so many temp readings. This is a Dell Studio laptop with I5 proc. There are 6 temp readings. I’m pretty sure core0 and core2 are my procs because of the temp readings, but not sure about the rest. There are also temp1, temp2, and two “temperatures”. The widget settings reports them as lmsensors/acpitz-virtual-0/temp1, lmsensors/acpitz-virtual-0/temp2, acpi/Thermal_Zone/1/Temperature, and acpi/Thermal_Zone/0/Temperature. Can anyone tell me what the last four temps are referring to?
Generally speaking, there are thermal sensors embedded in the CPU (one for each core, usually), in the motherboard under the processor (the “CPU” temp), about the middle of the m/b (the “system” temp) an, depending on how top-of-line your m/b is, under other chipsets. These sensors are usually driven by different circuits and system software (like ACPI).
Take a look at your m/b BIOS settings (you’ll see the m/b thermal sensors listed there) and tech specs (not the basic manuals, they usually omit that) for m/b and CPU, and you’ll probably find out.
