HELP GETTING ERROR

WELL sup folks im using a toshiba satellite u305-s2804 laptop with windows 7 installed it has 2gb ram .intel centrino dual core processor,160 gb hd ., what i wanna do is dual boot between windows and opensuse 11.3 which i downloaded today . i went ahead and set up a partion for the linux to be installed on (the space i gave linux is 25 gb) . but during the installation i got this error

failed to initialize the software repositories .aborting the instillation.

now i dont know what could have been the problem , is there anyone that can help me with this . plz

Hi,

Fisrt thing : you have to prepare more than one partition. 25GB is a little tight. You should at least have this configuration :

  • root partition / = 10GB
  • /home partition where you have your personnal files = 10 to 30GB
  • swap = 1GB

For the error, did you check the md5sum of your ISO file?

ok im kinda new to opensuse ill have to make more space then, and what is meant by md5sum is it a key or what .how do i check this?

Easiest way is to read the instructions on the download page. Is explains checksums.

Check your install media this way
http://lh6.ggpht.com/_hOiUsWwC6VQ/TC2F9NNQKPI/AAAAAAAAASQ/90wbVzpVa48/s640/1.jpg

i downloaded the dvd iso image from this page software.opensuse.org: Download openSUSE 11.3

and clicked on md5sum and got this

1a1da28c84e3cdad750d5cfa21c4fd17 openSUSE-11.3-DVD-i586.iso

This is correct
But you still need to check the Burned Disk as shown in the image I linked you to

**Thank you admin **

Hi
I run 20GB for / (including /home) a small /boot and 2xRAM in my case a
4GB swap. The difference on my system is I have an additional partition
shared for data.

That being said, did you have a wired ethernet connection on your
laptop when doing the install, as that error is seen when having no
internet connection active (as generally the wireless is not active)
and can skip the setting up repositories and let the install continue.

well it ran checks but i got this error (error reading sector 1685956, this dvd is broken) so i guess ill have to download another copy , may i ask which is the best way to download this software because i thought the direct link would be the best choice.

**hello malcom lewis yes the wireless was turned on during the instillation **

You don’t need to download it again.
Just burn the .iso to a new disk…
Unless you deleted the .iso?

Direct link downloads are fine. But I use ktorrent.
Check this post; NEW Users - openSuse Pre-install (general) – PLEASE READ

If the ISO checksum is OK then you do not have to re download. The burn was bad. Us the slowest burn speed you can. Use high quality disks.

Hi
Yes, but it will not get a wirelss connection if your router is running
encryption and requires a wep/wpa key. So your will see an error about
not being able to download repository details, hence I always ignore.

well i dont see an option to ignore it yast2 just keep asking me for cd or dvd media when i select dvd a error keeps coming up wanting to check repository if i select no the wholle instillation process starts over

this is what i get when i try to install software sorry bout the view i took the pic with my cell so the quality aint all that

That screen is part of the install process, not software installation.
Have you verified that the cd/dvd is good?

ok i just the iso file again when i checked the disc i got errors i dont know whats wrong , the dvd disc i used is made by benq dont know if its thats the problem.
