help files software in general & ...

Hello all,

Is it just me or are others having trouble finding help files for different programs?

I recently downloaded ‘wxdownload fast’ and then was unable to use it. When I clicked on HELP in the menu bar there was a link to the download website (can’t remember the exact address) but there was no help section there. So I checked out the forums but, again, no help section. Specifically, I wanted to know how to use the program. You’d think that a programmer would want the general public to be able to use his/her software, otherwise why publish it? In light of that, why not add a little something in the way of a help file, even just a few words that say “Do this to use my program.”.

So… I’ve uninstalled wxdfast out of frustration, only to find myself in a similar but different situation with aria2.

Downloaded it, as well as the required programs, ie, perl and perl-tk. The program is not listed anywhere under my apps, that I can find. And when I go to the folder it’s installed to and try to click on it, it opens in a text editor. I’m under the impression it was a GUI, or is it?

I’m very new to linux and openSUSE, as in, brand new, so please bear with my frustration. The learning curve is steep and I hate not knowing how things work…

So… … how do I use this program? Or would I be better off with wxdfast?

I’m using openSUSE 12.3 w/ KDE4 on a linux only machine. I’m trying to download videos and such from various sites.

Thanks in advance,
Vince

Aria is a command line utility

Why not tell us exactly what you are trying to achieve.

I had to Google ‘wxdownload’ to see what it was. And can’t see what you would need it for.

caf,

I would like to use wxdownload fast (wxdfast for short) to download larger files. It downloads files in multiple pieces, from what I understand, and is capable of error checking. I used this program in WinXP to download the openSUSE 12.3 iso. Problem is, it doesn’t seem to work under openSUSE, and that’s why I was looking for the help files. I figured maybe I’m doing something wrong.

RE: aria2 - from sourceforge’s website, “It can download a file from multiple sources/protocols and tries to utilize your maximum download bandwidth.”

So it would seem aria2 could also work for me, but further reading tells me that aria2 is, in fact, a command line program. What I found here is a GUI for aria2. The instructions for installing/using the program are severely lacking.

I’m really not the command line type, so something with a gui would better suit me.

So, what I’m after is a program with a gui that is capable of downloading large files from multiple sources and, ideally, supports download resume.

If aria2 fits the bill, can it be configured to use a gui? If not, is there another program that can?

Thanks for your patience,
Vince

You may find documentation in the ‘/usr/share/doc/packages’ directory. If not, try asking on the wxd forums. I’m sure they can provide you with help there.

What about ‘Down them all’ addon for firefox?

KDE had kget
