Help! Can't launch kwin! [OMG]

Hi. I recently felt adventurous and thought I’d give KDE 4.3b2 a shot. It felt much more unstable than I thought and I wanted to fallback to KDE 4.2.4 today (I changed all my Factory repos to KDE42 repos, then made sure that all 4.2.90 packages will be 4.2.4)

Unfortunately, in the middle of the download process of the 4.2.4 packages, system crashed and moved me to my login screen. I logged back, only to find an error saying kwin has crashed and it cannot be launched. I tried clicking ‘restart application’ but with no avail. I tried launching Yakuake to see if I have access to the console at least, and it said something like: ‘Yakuake needs Konsole to be installed, please install Konsole first’. Obviously, this happened because the crash took place in the middle of the downgrade. I tried launching in Failsafe mode (opensuse 11.1, BTW) but still no luck.

My luck was that when it crashed I had firefox open, so now after logging in it opened a firefox window for me, so I can write this topic.

Is there any way to manually downgrade the system and fix yast2 (because it propably got broken when the downgrade process was quitted unexpectedly)?

PS.: As a last resort, I can always install ext3 drivers on my Windows XP, backup my files, and format everything, but I still hope this can be fixed.

Thanks in advance!

Try running a zypper dup it should get it back in line other wise try zypper verify. Another way use the install media and tell it to update unconditionally, though I think the first 2 would be appropriate and should work fine.

OK, I figured out Ctrl+Alt+F1 puts my in console login.

One more thing - Will zypper dup downgrade to 4.1.3 or 4.2.4 ? (of course, KDE42 is bigger priority than opensuse 11.1 vanilla repos in my system)

PS.: I’ll check it out tommorow, I’m going to sleep now

When I tested it going up and down by dis/enabling 42 it would upgrade to 42 unless I had 42 disabled.

I would presume priority would have some influence but didn’t choose that option, choosing to disable the repo.

Thanks, it works now

I still need to update qt4, though. The system now uses 4.4.3, and I used 4.5.2 before. Not a big problem

FYI; The devs do not recommend qt45 with kde4.2
Indeed they don’t even recommend adding qt45 when using factory kde4.3 beta!

I’m sorry to say that, but I don’t care  So far qt45 proved (at least for me) to display GUI without any errors as 4.4 does and it hasn’t crashed even once.

I’ve got one more problem though - when I want to perform an action in YaST2 (I e.g. click on ‘libqt4’ to update it to 4.5.2) YaST hangs. There are two spinning circles near the cursor, and nothing happens.

I guess that the crash in the middle of the YaST2 work may have broken it. How to fix it? Maybe I should reinstall it via zypper?

Sadly, it seems a dead YaST is a common symptom of using QT 4.5.

Caveat emptor.

It’s not because of qt45 - I used it without any problems for a few months now. I KNOW it’s because of the downgrade process which went bad and was quitted unexpectedly! Is there any way to fix that, or I need to reformat?
