Help Cannot Login in openSUSE!

I am running GNOME Desktop on a openSUSE 11.2.
I was trying to compile drivers for my intel 945g and suprisingly after a reboot i wasn’t able to login as any other user except root. Here are the things that i installed

And One More Thing After I Updated openSUSE This Error Keeps On Coming on the screen.

and when i run xprop -root | grep XKB
i get

Any Help Will Be Very Much Appreciated ASAP
Thank You!

Why are you downloading stuff like that.

Please use software management to install applications and libraries.

Try opening a terminal and become su ( Become su in Terminal - HowTo - openSUSE Forums )

And do

do not log into openSUSE (or any *nix-like OS) desktop environment
(KDE/Gnome/etc) as root…such is never required and always dangerous
to the system and trouble causing…

one of the troubles it causes is it sometimes makes it impossible to
log into KDE/Gnome/etc as anyone other than root…

is that one of the problems you have going on?
or, maybe your filled up all the hard drive available to your root
directory??

when i try to login as any user other than root
The screen goes blank and i return to the login screen.
the error message in the previous post is displayed when i login as root.

can i know how i can install onboard drivers in a 945g chipset motherboard with intel 945g graphics, so that i can use its control panel to adjust brightness and contrast.

does that question mean you solved all the other problems, or are
you still logging in as root? do NOT do that.

if you have solved the problems which caused you to log in as root, then:

http://www.google.com/search?q=site%3Aopensuse.org+install+945g

otherwise, speak up…

Have you never been able to login as user?

Intel drivers are installed by default, well they are part of the kernel.

Did you check here:
http://forums.opensuse.org/new-user-how-faq-read-only/unreviewed-how-faq/430150-opensuse-graphic-card-practical-theory-guide-users.html#post2099022

i am still logging on as root.
what else can i do to fix the problem.
and i need to adjust the brightness and contrast could you suggest any application.
Please Help Me.

If this is the case, and that you didn’t answer my question. I suggest you start again, new install, and don’t login as root!

sorry, but you can not fix your machine by logging into Gnome as root…

this thread tells you (probably) how you killed your system by logging
into Gnome as root
http://forums.opensuse.org/install-boot-login/428353-iceauthority-cant-update.html

THEN, when you can log in as yourself again, you might be on your way
to fixing your brightness/contrast…for now can’t you do that with
the monitor’s controls?

and, as mentioned the video driver should have been automatically
installed…

palladium

I can’t adjust the brightness and contrast because i am using a notebook. Secondly i think that i can’t login as any other user due to the incorrect video drivers because, the screen goes blank after i logon and then back to logon page. But then why i am i able to logon as root, i mean i installed the graphic driver incorrectly on the machine so root should also be affected.
I have also tried to create new user from user management and login as the user but the sample problem persists, the screen goes blank and back to the login page.
Could u suggest anything else or its a full install again?
i mean it’s openSUSE, its open source let’s make it better.

As I see it, you have borked this install, logging in as root! So re-install. If you get a problem with the graphics, try a failsafe login, but NOT root.

Do you have access to another computer so you can troubleshoot post install?

Palladium offered a link, did you check it out?

Did you check any of the links offered? They are offered to help. And so should always be checked!

Yeah that link palladium gave me, it was quite interesting.
one more thing why is it not safe to login as root?

SDB:Login as root - openSUSE

If you follow the instructions at palladium’s link I think you may have a chance of fixing your problem.

ThePerfectPunk wrote:

correction! i log into a terminal/console as root, or launch a GUI
utility as root every day…usually several times a day…

what is unsafe is logging into any *nix DE (desktop environment) like
KDE/GNOME/XFCE/etc as root

this is a very small sample of thousands of documented reasons on the
net to not do that:

http://docs.kde.org/stable/en/kdebase-runtime/userguide/root.html
