I say bump up the RAM to 4GB if you can and use 64bit.
to make it snappier go with LXDM or XFCE desktop they are lighter.
LXDM works very well, I have it on a 6yo AMD Turion laptop 1.6ghz with 4GB RAM. works peaty well.
as an afterthought, “keellambert” sugestion for LiveCD is a good one but it might not work.
I had a lot off issues with LiveCD as it came with a full KDE desktop and generic video driver which did not work for my video card.
I took a risk installed an LXDM desktop which, since it is lighter and less demanding start up ok with generic driver, and allow me to load the proper proprietary driver after install. thus do try liveCD but if it will not work try doing a light install.
