I had a glut of updates to install (1300). So I did. Instead of reviewing each one, I haplessly installed the lot. Now I’ve rebooted and my release is showing a shell for 13.1 bottle.
i can log in, but I just want my Gnome desktop back. I have study to be doing.
Can someone please tell me a/ how to fix this and b/ how a release update file was added as a standard update for my release?
I would try to fully upgrade to 13.1 first. (he could do a clean install of 12.3 afterwards anyway if it doesn’t work)
Remove all extra repos, point the standard repos to 13.1 and run “sudo zypper dup”.
Or download a 13.1 install medium (maybe the NET-install ISO?) and “Upgrade an existing installation”.
Thanks for the tips. I’m not sure how I’m even going to transfer the data from the shell to here (on iPad currently). I’ll run the command and try as best I can to relay the info.
In response to your repos point. I have standard repos installed. Nothing more. I’m not confident in the OS enough to dabble or experiment.
Sorry, but that is nonsense. Nothing has been pushed out as an update, especially not to 12.1 because that is EOL already. You somehow added the 13.1 repo to your system and that’s why you got those updates.
That aside. All I want to know is how to load gnome or revert to my old version? I don’t drive the shell very well and would like access to my files.
12.1 is not supported anymore, most of the repos are not available any more.
You could add the standard ones from here and run “sudo zypper dup” to get back a 12.1 system. openSUSE:Mirrors - openSUSE
And what graphics card and driver do you use?
Maybe X is just not starting because you need to reinstall your driver? (13.1 contains a newer kernel of course, so any already installed proprietary driver will not work after the upgrade).
So in theory, if I grab another puter, download the 13.1 beta and go for an install, all will be well? My files (nuggets and Lynda’s) should be okay? This may be an option, if I can’t revert.
Again, haven’t added any repos. The zypper command suggested by another member has confirmed that. I have a nvidia graphics card. I’ll try and get more specifics. And, I made a mistake in my thread title. I was on 12,2 (and happy too). I’ll try the zypper dup command. I’m already logged in as root. Thanks.
Well, if not 13.1 then maybe you added the Factory repo (by clicking on a 1-click install intended for Factory f.e.). That one shows 13.1 as well atm I think.
So have a look for that in your repo lists.
Btw, you can also use yast in text mode, if you’re more comfortable with that.
Run “yast”, select “Software Repositories” and look through the list. If there’s anything containing “Factory” remove it!
Do you have a network connection in text mode?
Then I would suggest to run “zypper dup” afterwards to get back to a 12.2 system.
If the gfx driver is at fault, you could also try to boot to “recovery mode” (select “Advanced Options” at the boot menu).
Correct, as long as you don’t format your partitions of course.
But the nvidia driver still won’t work if you have that installed and if that is specified in the X configuration it will prevent the GUI from starting.
So try “recovery mode” first.
You could also try an upgrade installation with the 12.2 installation medium to get back to 12.2 but I don’t know if that would work.
Again, haven’t added any repos. The zypper command suggested by another member has confirmed that.
Are you suggesting that your repos only have 12.2 sources listed?
What kernel is running?
uname -a
Have you run any oneclick installer prior to this?
Uname -a gave me: 3.4.47-2.38-desktop. Aside from what wolfi323 suggested (factory) I can only see 12.2 repos.
TBH, I don’t remember any 1-clicks. As best I can recall, pencil was the last thing I installed. That doesn’t mean I haven’t. Especially as I have the factory repo, which isn’t good apparently.
Hi folks, I’ve deleted factory and rebooted in recovery mode again.
im cabled into my router, but it seems I still can’t resolve dns, so no Internet. Am I okay ignoring all of the repos that zypper dup is looking to resolve? I have the files locally right?
No. Except for the 12.2 installation medium of course if you have that.
I would suggest the following:
Enter YaST->Network->Network Settings and switch to “Traditional method with ifup” on the “Global Options” tab. Make sure DHCP is activated and check if your network card is started at boot (should be).
After clicking “OK” hopefully the wired network should work.
And the run “sudo zypper dup” in a terminal window to get your system back to 12.2.
