Hello

Hello everyone, my name is Alessandro from Italy.
I have tried a ton of distro Linux, Bsd and even OpenSolaris, even Suse 32 bit (on DVD) some years ago.

The agreement between Novel and Microsoft has bothered me greatly but in the end OpenSuse is free then patience. :\

Currently I use the most ArchLinux while for serious thing I use Ubuntu Hardy 8.04 (an LTS release).

My idea is try OpenSuse (from CD) using the 64 bit edition perhaps only between some days or maybe next year.

I have read the support for each version of opensuse is 18 months (while before was 24 months) I am curious:

  1. to understand compared to ubuntu, if it is less distressed by bug or malfunction from the beginning or not;
  2. about the available support on the forum for the resolution of the problems.

Perhaps i will do some (or even a lot) questions even before install opensuse because if i have more clear idea in advance i can reduce the time to resolve eventual problem after the installation.

Perhaps someone could ask why you want tried the 64 bit version?
I have tried only one linux version at 64 bit (Sabayon some times ago), while i’m reading this forum (as guest), i read on the forum that the separation between 32 and 64 bit was limited because now seem there are less problem then i’m curious if finally the 64 bit version is really usable without headaches.
And with 18 months support perhaps i have some time even for more serious test during application developer.

Note:
Sorry in advance for my limited english. :\

Welcome alexopensuse!

Most would say if you have 64 bit processor, then there is no reason not to run 64 bit OS now. Similar question asked here:

32bits or 64bits 11.2? - openSUSE Forums

I can’t remember a serious issue for me with 64 bit since I switched over 6 months ago.

Welcome Alex.

Even a year ago, there were still issues with 64bit, due to lack of applications like Flash, but Adobe and other developers finally got it all done. There is no longer a need to put off moving to 64bit.

I once read that a 64 bit OS is best for computers that have at least 4 gigs of RAM. Less than 4gig RAM, even if you have a 64 bit processor, could slow down the computer due to double the size addressing.

Please correct me if I’m wrong about this.

Now I’m used OpenSuse 11.2 64 bit on LiveCD.
On the Pc with nVidia I must correct the resolution of the video (well i have to read my notes because is a problem that happen normally … and probably I can resolve quickly despite xorg is changed) while on the Pc with Ati is ok.

Yes a 64 bit OS occupies more memory but i have noticed that if you have even “only” 2 gb you can use the system well even with big application running on the same time.

Discussion about 64 bit.
As I said before I have used only one 64 bit linux system, if in the end i install OpenSuse I have many several questions regarding the development so i think i will open some questions on the forum.

Thanks everyone for the hi!
