Hello & New to OpenSuSE

Hi All,

Old person and new to OpenSUSE, using old(ish) hardware.

I guess I have been trying various flavours of Linux for ages - was using Mint for around a year but upgraded my hardware and it no longer worked so have come across to OS (should have done so from the beginning).

My OS machine is an HP XW8600 from approx 2005.

It has 32Gb Ram, Dual Intel Xeon 2.50Ghz cpu’s (for 8 cores), Nividia FX4800 GPU, 1 x 480 Gb SSD and 4 x 500 Gb SAS in raid with a 680 Gb logical drive - Oh and it weighs a ton !!.

Eventually will get Samba sorted to share the logical drive and possibly even DHCP and DNS Server’s so that I can retire my 2012 R2 Domain Controller.

So the Covid aware virtual bar is open and its lemonades all round.

Welcome aboard. I am interested to know why Mint wasn’t working for you. Anyway, I hope you enjoy learning with OpenSUSE, and feel free to share your journey here. :sunglasses:

Welcome from another old person - though I have some very new hardware, I also keep a 2007 Dell Notebook for taking with me on journeys and it runs LEAP fine.

Hi and welcome,
Age is definitely relative. That guy in the mirror is way ahead of me - every morning. And even I’m not the freshest leaf at the lotus.
Looking forward to hearing of your success story with Samba.

Is the “K One, W One” in your pseudonym a hint as to your whereabouts?

Please be aware that, more than a few of us have admitted to being at least in retirement and/or “silverbacks” – I admit my age in my profile … >:)

BTW, in your question regarding partitioning, I’ve pointed you to the Linux Standards – yes, there are Standards and, the sponsors include well known large companies who have been involved in computing for more than a few years …

Welcome to Linux and Open Source – we’re doing our best to avoid having the things which affect our lives being held held as “secrets” – we prefer transparency, openness and, community …

It may well be where I was born but not where I am currently

I am more used to lies, conspiracy, falsehoods and back stabbing …oh wait wrong forum :X

Snap! >:)

  • G’day! Ow’yre goin’ then?

Comes down to Crusaders or Hurricanes ?, Speights or DB ?

Mint 20.04 had been working fine on my aging hardware , some updates were applied and I lost all graphics - blank black screen, I thought it might be the Nividia drivers as the FX4800 isnt supported in Linux , so installed a Radeon R240 but got the same result. I reinstalled from scratch and again it worked for a while did some updates and got the blank black screen. At this point I even tried POP!os but that didn’t work either, with the FX4800 still just the blank black screen and the R240 stuck in 640x480.

Both cards work well with Windows and so far with OpenSUSE (No FX4800 support in 15.3 - so maybe a saving grace)

Or, Tui – And, Manawutu → Hurricanes …

North Canterbury all the way …right so thats narrowed it down a fair bit …

More than enough for this Forum … >:)
