Heads Up on the Latest KDE4 Update

Don’t freak out when you get the latest updates from Factory. You’ll need to logout and back in and possibly install some plasma-themes
oxygen
slim-glow
glassified

Go to System Settings>Apppearance>Workspace
and configure

Thanks for the info.

The update seems to have broken any plasma theme I apply though.

Do you know if a bug report has been posted?

I have not looked. And I didn’t report anything as mine is working. Try a reboot first and even try creating a new user account to see if the same issues exist there.

Ok, cheers.

I’ve rebooted a couple of times since the update.
(I applied it last night)

And one of the first things I did when I noticed the problem was to run rm -rf .* from RL3 to remove all config files from my home folder. (It’s a fairly recent install so I don’t mind nuking the set up)

I installed slim-glow from kde-look and unfortunately all the widgets and panel appeared to be completely transparent.
With other themes there are just various elements missing, text input areas and such.

I’ll tinker some more and see what I can do.

Cheers

T

Slim Glow from KDE-look has a big warning not to use the version from kde-look, but to use the version that comes with your distro…Remove the slim glow theme, install it through the software installer.

No issues here on latest updates, not on 11.2, not on 11.3 M7 in Vbox (must say I wiped the ~/.kde4 folder in Vbox, before I knew there could be issues)

Maybe a little bit off topic.

Any factory repo for KDE4.5 ATM rather than unstable, as KDE4.5 beta 1 is released.
KDE - KDE Software Compilation 4.5 Beta1 Release Announcement

A special focus of this release cycle is the stability of the software delivered with KDE SC 4.5. While there are many exciting new features, developers have spent considerable amounts of time finishing off features and polishing those that haven’t come to full bloom yet.

Thanks

Packages in the UNSTABLE repo have version 4.4.80, IIRC the .80 used to be the first beta, the .90 the second beta, .99 the RC, correct me if I’m wrong.

In 11.3 M7

kde4-config -v
Qt: 4.6.2
KDE Development Platform: 4.4.80 (KDE 4.4.80 (KDE 4.5 Beta1)) "release 2"
kde4-config: 1.0

Give it a go - It’s great;)

Did some checking on package versions from the UNSTABLE repo vs. the versions on KDE - KDE SC 4.4.80 Info Page, both are 4.4.80
I’ll add the repos on my laptop, install and see what’s coming to us, ‘dd’ the entire SSD to an identical one first to have a backup, yes

:shame::shame: Updated, logged out, logged back in,

never took a look at the versions :shame: I’ve seen it now…it’s already on in my VBox M7. Will install on the laptop anyway.

Edit: doing so right now. Some minor dependency issues on k3b, kaddressbook. Will report back

Forgot to mention.
kde login manager is borked

Try the Session or Menu button:)

is it true that factory contains unreleased software, only?

Is that a trick question.
No, I think.
But it depends on which repos we are talking about
I was meaning:
Index of /repositories/KDE:/KDE4:/Factory:/Desktop/openSUSE_11.2

Which is released software

hmmmmm…i guess i don’t understand…

how can it be “released software” if it is not yet been “released” in
an oss repo?

i mean, openSUSE 11.3 is in factory, but not “released”…and, on the
day it is “released” there will be a great rush around the earth to
download it…not from factory, but from 11.3 oss…

how/why can KDE “release” software in factory an then later “release”
it again (or is it “re-released”) when it is moved to oss as an
update/upgrade (as have several different “releases” in the KDE4.x
series, if i recall correctly–and, maybe i do not)

what other software in factory is considered as “released software”?

how can the routine openSUSE users learn which is “released” and which
is “unreleased”? is there a page in the wiki where the various
directories of the mirrors are marked as “released” or not?

Define released!

AFAIC

Released is Stable and available for download as such
KDE - KDE SC 4.4.0 Caikaku Release Announcement

Which is what the repo I quoted provides.

But don’t bother getting your knickers in a twist over this, because I’ll agree with you if you like.
Yes, openSUSE has not released it as part of their released OS.

There we are.
Mea Culpa for taking the bait. Let’s leave it at that!

hmm I updated yesterday without any issue. I am using Factory tho, not the Unstable repo. Didn’t have any problem with the Oxyzone plasma theme.

i guess that is what my question was/is and remains…has “the
community” defined what is meant by released/pre-released software?

and, after your response i wonder why do you assign me the juvenile
emotions of having my “knickers in a twist” when i’m just trying to
learn the difference between oss and factory and how those relate to
released and pre-released software…(i thought i knew, but . . .)

WAIT, i just read (for the first time) what may be the answer (or at
least an answer): “There exists an openSUSE site called “Factory”
which is where the “Developers” (aka Devs) from all over the world put
together the next release of openSUSE.” http://tinyurl.com/33eap5s

I am fairly confident you already know the difference between OSS and Factory repo’s. You have been around here long enough to know anyway.

Anyway this thread was meant to be a pointer to those using the kde4 factory desktop 11.2, that it seemed to behave slightly off. It’s released software in that kde released it, but it’s not stable necessarily as it is, not in the true sense of the word.

Currently in my 11.3 M7 laptop (using it now) I have kde4 factory unstable. But I started a new thread on kde4.5 beta

:peace:

like i said, i thought i knew but then again i wasn’t sure…because
i kept seeing announcements and discussions here about new software
hitting the factory…which i thought should be in the testing
forum, so i figured i actually didn’t understand…

The packages from the repo mentioned are still 4.4.3, I reverted from UNSTABLE, kept having kded crashes, and don’t have the time to sort it out. Packages for M7 did not have the crashes, a fresh user account on 11.2 did.
