Head to head: Fedora 23 vs openSUSE 42.1

Well both Fedora 23 and openSUSE 42.1 come out on the same day, this rarely happens so i will be comparing both releases comparing what each distro offers and what one is better in the end, sure Fedora 23 will have the much shorter lifespan but it still offers a 32bit version so pros and cons for both will be noted.
I will install openSUSE first as I really hate anaconda as installer, I wont be doing Ubuntu again until 16.04 probably the last buntu I will use as its going down in flames once they go use Unity 8, Mir and abandon debian

Also sorry about the typo 'oipenSUSE" I know you openSUSE folks get anal about that

I will be interested in your comparison.

Yes, I also don’t like anaconda. That’s part of why I stopped testing fedora releases.

Well I will be installing Leap 42.1 RC quite soon as the RC will be much closer to final then Fedora 23’s beta, plus I dont think it will be such a massive jump from RC to final. It harldy ever is with openSUSE

The RC is not available any more.
The repos contain the final version already since Thursday.

If you use the RC1 NET installation CD, you will get the final release installed in the first place, if you use the RC1 DVD you will get a lot of updates immediately after the installation…

Tomorrow is the official release day, then you’ll also be able to download the final DVD too.

Yeah but its still close enough, I doubt the final will make much difference

Well hate to say it but seems like Fedora 23 is the better of the two, I am having issues all over the place with openSUSE.
But I will give both a few days before writing up a review as things are messy on fedora as well in some areas.
But its bad enough that I am using windows 10 right now, yipes.

Not so much a “Head to Head” then, more like a “Bottom to Bottom”… and you intend to use the best of the Bottoms…

I have already installed both in VirtualBox machines.
And first findings.
Fedora 23 sounds without any problem and needed setting.
openSUSE Leap 42.1 is without a sound despite my effort so solve it.

What desktop type was that?

Yeah things are still white hot, a lot of initial hurdles facing both distros so it would be unfair to review them just yet.
I may have to belay the comparison for another two weeks, its quite messy right now.

KDE Plasma 5 for both.

One other thing I have to consider with openSUSE is why there is no live image for it?
Live images are great for testers but i guess you hjave to have the non live now, that blows.

They were unmaintained, i.e. nobody cared for them.
So they got dropped for Leap.

Tumbleweed Live ISOs are still available though (like 13.1 and 13.2), and plenty of others on SUSE Studio, where you can even create your own.

Oh, I had failed sound for Xfce in a Leap Beta1 VM (openSUSE packaged VBox), but no PulseAudio installed with Xfce and not a great reputation for sound support. No difference after upgrading it to RC1 & Final.

There is PulseAudio in openSUSE Leap.

Well its official: openSUSE 42.1 is the looser
Why you may ask? I cant use my god****ed wireless printer, its not working in openSUSE but is picked up instantly in fedora.
What a shame, I have to wait three years if I before I give opensuse another go, it just sucks too bad.
And this time I dont give a **** if I “misspelled” opensuse, its now a bottom of the barrel distro in my not so humble opinion.

Indeed, but not installed by default so not sure if it’s meant to work with Xfce. In fact when I did install it, it made a bad situation worse. :\

I’ve had to go to “Find Network Printer” and put in the IP address before it would detect it and automatically include the necessary drivers and work fine afterwards, and this has been for some time now so it isn’t something new to Leap. Heck, it hasn’t auto-detected it in Tumbleweed which I just re-installed a few days ago.

MadmanRB - enough with the cussing here. Consider this a formal warning.
