hddtemp functionality

Should this site and the posting be considered the norm? hddtemp is not included in man7 Linux pages

Subject: Different implementations of hddtemp , which is the correct one

2>&1 hddtemp with RedHat / Fedora does not need a drive. If no drive is specified It uses output of ls /dev/sd?

2>1 hddtemp with SUSE / Tumbleweed requires a drive to be specified, One must specify /dev/sd{a,b,…etc}

Fedora has hddtemp stored in /usr/bin #available to all

Question is asked for Tumbleweed,. but it may apply to Leap as well
Suse has hddtemp stored in /usr/sbin #reserved for root

With Fedora I use hddtemp to tell me if the drive is sleeping. I can be a regular user

With SUSE hddtemp is privileged. Only as root, I can determine if drive is sleeping,

I would like to have a consistent definition of execution.

The hddtemp -I does not specify if SUSE or Fedora’s way is the correct one.

Hi
By the looks Fedora uses pam (selinux?) configuration to allow the user to access, openSUSE uses the hddtemp service and query the relevant port as your user. Drives are configured via YaST /etc/sysconfig…

Not sure how it (hddtemp) tells you if the drive is sleeping?
