HDD fails to start

A new WD Elements SE Portable 2 TB USB 2.0 external hard drive has one exFAT partition (preformatted) and works on Windows XP fine. I want to make ext3 partition on it but it is not recognised when plugged.

fdisk: cannot open /dev/sdb: Input/output error

When plugged LED on HD lights and starts flashing after 5 sec. Drive starts, I can hear normal hdd sounds. It is plugged to USB 2.0 port on the back og the motherboard using its onw original (short) WD cable (no extend).

Try to open the partitioner module in YaST, if you haven’t done so already, and see if its detected there.

I have done so already. It’s not detected there either.

What does ‘lspci’ and ‘lsusb’ output?

dmesg | grep -i usb

It’s detected right after usb plug in

Well, you have to look at the last few lines of unfiltered dmesg output
right at that instant.

Firmware changed?

Firmware changed?

No, I did not update firmware. It still works on Win XP.

Could it be your USB port(s) or anything else hard-ware related? Do you dual boot openSUSE/WinXP or is XP on another computer?

BTW, could there be some security lock involved?

XP is on another computer. USB ports work fine for USB flash

No, I don’t use security locks and it work without on Windows XP.

Tried to mount manually

mount.exfat-fuse /dev/sdb1 /mnt/exfat
FUSE exfat 1.0.1
BUG: failed to read 512 bytes from file at 0.

That’s not what I said. I know you did not do that.
I simply wonder at that particular message, it seems strange.

Ah, so you have not tested this problem disk on this problem computer
with another operating system. We don’t know if the hardware is OK.

It might be that the exfat format is a problem, and thus that partition will not mount, but it seems weird that the hard-drive isn’t properly detected.

I’m no expert on this though!

Olav

Just a suggestion, but if you boot into runlevel 3 and try to use the ‘parted’ command: parted /dev/sdb
Does this give you any new options?
I just presume that, for some reasons, your desktop environment and udev might interfere in a negative way; a presumption which might be completely unfounded, still, it might be worth a try.

Tried on the same hardware with Windows 7, works fine.

No, but that would be the next problem.
Detecting the disk and reading the partition table is one problem,
unrelated to the next, which is mounting any filesystem found.

exfat is indeed a problem, true enough. But we are not there yet.

Same computer? Strange.

Well…

You said that it works for an instant, then fails seconds later. We need
to see dmesg output just at that failure moment.

You can, for example, open a terminal and run:

su -
tailf /var/log/messages

Then connect that disk and see what comes out on that terminal, and copy
it back here. Maybe we can see why it disconnects.
