I wish to buy an inexpensive USB connected “webcam” which is compatible with Leap 15.
Unfortunately, a number of the retail store websites just show MS-Windows compatibility.
I used to rely on the HCL, the Hardware Compatibility List, but at least as far as I could
find it on opensuse.org for webcams, it seems to be labeled as being out of date, etc.
Is there an up to date HCL somewhere, especially one that includes webcams??
Not really. And with the manufacturors using so many different types of components, this is hard to do. But, on the other side, I haven’t seen webcam issues appearing in the forums regularly for ages, I guess most will work.
Its been years since I purchased a new webcam … and for that matter, years since I purchased a new PC … Its also been years since I checked for compatible webcams so I can not help with a specific recommendation. But I may have suggestions to help guide you ?
My recollection is the the most popular GNU/Linux web cam driver is “uvc” and hence it behooves one to procure a webcam that is uvc compatible, or procures a hardware device (such as a laptop/ultrabook) whose webcam is ‘uvc’ compatible.
I think this is the website for uvc: http://www.ideasonboard.org/uvc/
Further, I think on that website one can go directly to here: http://www.ideasonboard.org/uvc/#devices … which lists some compatible devices.
Now my recollection is that website list is not complete - but its a start …
Significant also is the reference to a mailing list where one can get ‘uvc’ driver support: https://sourceforge.net/projects/linux-uvc/lists/linux-uvc-devel … Now if not wanting to subscribe to the list (where I myself would not want to subscribe unless I specifically was looking for support) one can always browse the ‘uvc’ mailing list archives: https://sourceforge.net/p/linux-uvc/mailman/linux-uvc-devel/
I’ve rambled on a bit - but I hope the above is of some help.
