I have a fresh TW install, only a couple of days old. I went into system settings and in “Screen Locking” i set that to “never” and unchecked the “Lock after waking from sleep” Next i went to "Power Management, and in there I set (from top to bottom) “Do Nothing” “Show Logout Screen” Unchecked “Change Screen Brightness”, Set “Dim Automatically” to “never” and “Turn off Screen” to “10 minutes When Locked and Unlocked” follow finally by power profile to “Power Save” Left the next box blank and the last box says “after 9 minutes”
I assume “When Locked and Unlocked” really means “When Locked or Unlocked”?
Anyway, my 2 screens shut off as expected but after a minute or two they come right back on.
How do i set this up so my dual monitor screens turn off after n minutes of inactivity and stay off until i press a key or move the mouse?
@erbenton AMD GPU and using amdgpu driver?
no, sorry i should have added this:
2 NVidia GPU’s with one handling the 2 displays:

02:00.0 VGA compatible controller: NVIDIA Corporation TU104 [GeForce RTX 2060] (rev a1)
@erbenton Are you using the Nvidia rpms? Can you show the output from inxi -GSaz
Yes using the the Yast rpms.
Here is a part of inxi (i can post it all if you want but i don’t think its relevant

@erbenton Normally with Nvidia GPU’s I add the Kernel boot options fbdev=1 nvidia_drm.modeset=1
So, since your running X11 and not Wayland, do you have an Xorg.conf file for the Nvidia cards?
What does /sbin/modprobe -c nvidia | grep NVreg
show?
# /sbin/modprobe -c nvidia | grep NVreg
options nvidia NVreg_DeviceFileUID=0 NVreg_DeviceFileGID=482 NVreg_DeviceFileMode=0660 NVreg_PreserveVideoMemoryAllocations=1
# ls /etc/X11/
xdm xinit xorg.conf.d xorg.conf.install
# ls /etc/X11/*
/etc/X11/xorg.conf.install
/etc/X11/xdm:
xdm-config Xservers
/etc/X11/xinit:
xinitrc.common xinitrc.d
/etc/X11/xorg.conf.d:
00-keyboard.conf
@erbenton I would probably add a /etc/modprobe.d/50-nvidia.conf file and in that file add options nvidia NVreg_DynamicPowerManagement=0x02
and then run dracut -f --regenerate-all
Ref: https://download.nvidia.com/XFree86/Linux-x86_64/550.100/README/powermanagement.html
Always worth a read of everything https://download.nvidia.com/XFree86/Linux-x86_64/550.100/README/installationandconfiguration.html
Else it could be a desktop environment issue… I don’t use the rpms here, generally because they are behind the times…
I will give that a try and report back here in the morning, thanks so much for spending the time to examine this issue
It didnt change anything
@erbenton OK, so if you open a terminal, switch to root user and in that terminal run journalctl -f
the adjust your timer down to say one minute. Then when the screens pop back on, check the log output to see what may be triggering the screens not staying off.
ok, so it looks like this is whats causing the wakeup, it starts at just about the time it begins to wakeup:

@erbenton Hmm, that’s gsd-media-keys/wireplumber you have some GNOME applications installed on Plasma?
Or maybe it’s getting confused with multiple audio cards…
I didnt install gnome stuff knowingly, the trouble now is that de-installing wireplumber would automatically delete plasma6-sesion-x11 and patterns-kde-kde
I’ve seen this kind of nonsense a lot over the years. Why should should the entire desktop depend on wireplumber ?
@erbenton It’s likely a wireplumber issue which is the default for Tumbleweed. So I would leave the nvidia settings as they are. But I’m not up with audio foo, hopefully @deano_ferrari and/or @oldcpu can provides some more troubleshooting now.
Ok, thanks for all your help. I feel like we have really narrowed it down. As an experiment i set ExecStart to both services =/bin/true and it reduced the number of wplua errors to just 2. I was hoping that if those could be eliminated the system might stay “screens of” but with the 2 errors they wake right back up.
The two people you mentioned - are they aware we are working on this? If not can you ping them and ask for help?
