When I get to the login screen, and I type in my user name and password, the display manager seems to lock up–though I am able to get to a CLI prompt with ALT+SHIFT+F2. After I restart the DM, login proceeds as normal. I have not updated recently, so it is not due to new packages. What logs should I look at to locate the problem?
I often have that happen with opensuse 13.2, usually on an older computer with Nvidia graphics, though it has occasionally happened on another computer. I’m using “lightdm”.
When that happens, I use CTRL-ALT-BACKSPACE twice to restart the DM. On a couple of occasions, I had to go to the root command line to restart it, but that’s rarer.
I think I have seen this happen twice with SDDM on Tumbleweed Krypton, though I put it down to probably a Krypton issue that might go away on the next round of updates. I don’t think I have had a problem with regular Tumbleweed (where I also use “lightdm”).
I think I fixed it. I remaned the original files to the following files:
edward@linux-azyr:~/.config> ls -l *.old
-rw------- 1 edward users 12869 May 25 20:39 kglobalshortcutsrc.old
-rw------- 1 edward users 31612 May 25 20:24 khotkeysrc.old
-rw------- 1 edward users 2056 May 25 20:24 kwinrc.old
-rw------- 1 edward users 18 May 25 20:39 kwinrulesrc.old
-rw------- 1 edward users 1123 May 25 20:39 plasmashellrc.old
edward@linux-azyr:~/.config>
Three reboots and no problem.
