have sound, but not in headphones

opensuse recognises my logitech usb 350 headphones, but no sound comes out of them. i can speak into the microphone and hear myself through the speakers of hte headphones, but general audio like youtube or mp3s all come out of my onboard sound card (which appears to work fine).

any help appreciated.

Look for the volume icon in the system tray, click it and open the mixer. Check that the headphones are not in Mute mode.

For some reason, the sound icon no longer exists there. it disappeared right after i edited the sound settings from yast2, not sure why.

I was fiddling with the settings in the mixer you’re describing, but i couldnt find anything that would set the headphones to default (similar to windows 7)

Edit: also, they’re not on mute

Go to Multimedia menu and choose Volume Control > Kmix. That will put it back in the system tray. I don’t know why you don’t have sound in the headphones, sorry.

USB headphones may require you to reconfigure them as primary in YaST (and in KDE under configure desktop)

How does one normally switch between sound outputs?
I tried fiddling with the settings in YaST and in configure desktop, but that just made me lose my onboard sound.

I can actually hear the test sound when I click it through my headphones but nothing actually produces sound that I can hear through them.

On a side note, I’m really trying to like *nix and its variants, but everything just seems so, how can I put this, annoying. So far, opensuse is the best.

USB headphones in Linux are often a pain. Manufacturers build and support them with MS-Windows in mind. They typically do NOT support Linux. Typically they provide NO support (NONE) to Linux developers.

There used to be a wiki page for providing guidance for configuring USB headphones in openSUSE, but no one has taken up the maintenance of that page: USB headphones - openSUSE so that link is in danger of being permanently deleted. I do not have USB headphones myself, so I do NOT feel comfortable in being the one responsible for updating that page and migrating it over the to new wiki area.

Since you have such headphones, perhaps you could take up the task?

I’m not at home now, so when I do get home and have a chance, I’ll have a read through it and see if I can get mine working.

I have no problem with looking after it, once I get mine working. With my new found knowledge, I’ll gladly update it.
I just noticed a notification at the top of that link that says user:Jonathan_ R is updating it and that no one else should make any major edits to it.

If you are able to get your headphones working, and then able to update the wiki that would be great.

Jonathan_R is a user on our forum, and if you think you can help, you can just send him a PM noting you think you can update the USB headphone/speaker page (assuming of course that you are able to figure this out using that old version of the page for guidance).

No dramas.
