After working with it for a while (basically 1 day) I have openSUSE 12.1 running nicely on my brand new HP g6 laptop. And I’m loving it!!!
The video driver gave me fits but after finally following the instructions for using the fglrx ATI driver, it’s working very nicely. Even have a multimonitor setup running smoothly.
here’s the link I used and just followed it step by step:
Everything works too, all the quick keys work, incl. sound, brightness, menu keys and it even sleeps properly when I close the lid.
I almost went with another distro but stuck it out and I don’t regret it all. I’ve been an OS user for the past 3 years now and have never looked back.
All I need now is some good themes to put on Gnome to make it more colorful.
I’ve even turned rogue at work and removed my corp Windows image and replaced with OS 11.4 running VM Workstation for my corp Windows image. (we use a few windows only apps)
Being a Linux sysadmin, having a Linux based workstation is the best solution for me and OS meets everyone of my needs for my job. In fact I can do more on my Linux LT for work than most others can in windows. And I don’t have to run the dos2unix command any time I have to xfer a file from my workstation.
I loved to read your story linuxfan50 and good to hear not everyone is stuck with Windows as their base. I don’t suppose I will ever have the same ability so I do envy those that can. Its funny, but I live in Austin, Texas and all I see around town are signs for one company asking for anyone that knows Linux to apply and they have a billboard, more than one, on every major highway in and out of the area. Which just means to me that some day, there will be even more folks such as yourself being able to use and enjoy Linux. And of course, we hope that that will be openSUSE Linux (or of couse SLED or SLES). Thanks for sharing this with us here.
