Hauppage WINTV-HVR-1600 card

Please help if you can. All ideas are welcome at this point.
I just can’t get this pci tv-card to work except on windows. Hauppage
FAQ says: "Can I use the WinTV-HVR-1600 with Linux?

I understand the cx18 driver is built-in to the new kernel already, but
I need to configure Conexant chipset firmware, which I downloaded, but
have no clue how or what to do with it. There are 3 firmware files:
v4l-cx23418-apu.fw, v4l-cx23418-cpu.fw, and v4l-cx23418-dig.fw. Also I
downloaded another tar folder: v4l-dvb-1b8feb9944dd which has all kinds
of headers and makefile and whatnot. But I’m still clueless what to do.

I just bought one of these cards also. I may try to get it up and working sometime this weekend. It is showing up in dmesg just look at the cx18 and tveeprom. My card shows up in dmesg but not yastsimilar to your situation. I would go over to ivtv and search the mailing lists for more info. If I get it working this weekend I’ll let you know what I had to do if anything.

There is a new beta from LinuxTV.org with a Conexant cx23418 driver which supports the Hauppauge WinTV-HVR-1600 card.

Unpack, ‘make’, ‘make install’ (as root), ‘make unload’ (as root) and run ‘modprobe cx18’.

There is still a lot of work to be done, in particular there is nosupport for the ATSC stream. What is working is basic MPEG capturing, raw YUV capture and raw PCM capture. Also pretty much all of the controls that were also in ivtv are working with cx18.

The firmware needs to be extracted from the Windows Hauppauge HVR-1600 driver, available here:

Unzip, then copy the following files to the firmware directory and rename them as follows:

Note that if you get the message “Could not start the CPU” then edit cx18-firmware.c, go to line 350 and change the ‘#if 0’ to ‘#if 1’ and see if that helps. It is not clear to me whether that is needed or not, I get conflicting results.

I’m another trying to get off the Windows platform. I started on a Wang 2200mvp, then had a Xenix system running on a Wyse 386. Moved next to a Novell environment with Windows and Mac clients and now live in the ubiquitous Windows Server/Client world. I’m working on moving the whole company away from there, but am first trying to bring my skills back up at home. I’ve got a mediocre Dell Dimension E521 with an AMD64 and an ATI HD-3670. I’m using BootIt NG for multi-booting and I’ve got openSuSE 11.1 / Gnome up and running. I like it a lot, but am having the same problem with the Hauppauge HVR-1600. I had read that TVtime worked with it and have followed the directions I can find. This is what appears to be the relevent info from dmesg:

TVTime is not an application for ivtv based cards including the Cx18. the cx18 and the HVR series have onboard video encoders that means that anything comming out of /dev/video0 is in mpeg+TS format already. What you can do to get easy PVR style functionality out of it, is do


#cat /dev/video0 > watch.mpg &
#mplayer -vf yadif watch.mpg

Between those two commands get something to drink and eat while you watch because it’ll cache the program on your disc that way you can skip commercials via mplayers forward and back. -vf yadif turns on the deinterlacer because 9/10 times you’ll be watching something that’s interlaced anyway and the HVR 1600 doesn’t deinterlace.

TvTime does work with dvb cards.
You will need an application capable of using the dvb card.

kaffeine has that capability I beleive.

Does this mean that simply 'cat’ing video0 will display it ? At this point I’m more interested in watching the live TV than in recording.

'cat’ing the video will save it to your hard drive, you’ll need to buffer it because that’s just how the card is. watching it will require mplayer.

Did you ever copy the firmware files to the correct directory so they can upload on boot? You can do so by initiating this command in the directory above the directory that contains the cx18-firmware folder.

sudo cp cx18-firmware/*.fw /lib/firmware/

then reboot and try the aforementioned programs. That just might work. No guarauntees though :\

I have a Hauppage pci card also try what Saedelaere suggested it’s the only thing that work for me.
