I’m wondering if anyone has managed to get the Novell client (probably the last version for SLED 11) to work in openSUSE 12.2. It has a dependency on gtk1 and getting the compatibility wrappers has proven to be challenging. There is a gtk1-compat-devel package in the games repo but installation fails on a dependency:
Problem: gtk1-compat-devel-0.10-8.4.x86_64 requires pkgconfig(gdk-pixbuf-2.0), but this requirement cannot be provided
uninstallable providers: gdk-pixbuf-devel-2.26.1-2.1.4.x86_64[openSUSE-12.2-1.6]
gdk-pixbuf-devel-2.26.1-2.1.4.i586[repo-oss]
gdk-pixbuf-devel-2.26.1-2.1.4.x86_64[repo-oss]

imo it would be nice someone (maybe from suse.com) provide an SDB for
the Wiki on how to do this…
i mean, we get the question often enough and there are so few here who
know how to do it, that it would seem to me to be in the best interest
of the enterprise side to answer the question definitively (including
how to, for example, provide all the dependencies…

The big problem is that the client wasn’t released with kernel modules
for kernels post-SLE11, which means openSUSE 12.x users have to compile
things to get it working - and part of what needs to be compiled is
actually closed source (so they can’t).
So an SDB article isn’t likely to help until Novell gets it in gear and
compiles versions of the kernel modules needed for openSUSE 12.x. The
problem is that they’ve never officially supported openSUSE at all with
the client.

Well, no, because at least on openSUSE 11.x, it can be made to work, but
it’s not a trivial thing. A canned answer isn’t really the way to go
with this, trying to help those who want to try to get it to work if you
have the knowledge is the way to go.
