Hardware motherboard experience for new PC ?

The PC arrived late this evening. I have not installed openSUSE on it, but I did boot it to a 64-bit openSUSE-13.1 liveDVD (I am typing this post from it now).

Congrats on the new toy! Specs look terrific, glad it booted the openSUSE LiveDVD so easily.

where special desktop effects work fine (cube rotation, … etc … )

Excellent. You might be able to get a reasonable feel for the 3D speed by experimenting with the openGL screensavers.

I’m thinking of making sdb (the SSD drive) the boot drive and sda (the HD) the data drive. I suspect I can reverse these two in BIOS (I need to check).

Or you could swap SATA cables so the SSD appears first. Definitely boot from and have the OS on the SSD to take advantage of the wicked fast seeks.
