I have Leap 15.3 installed and able to connect to WAN and am trying to use the IBM Fix Central site to install firmware upgrades. I believe some are needed as I have had some problems with IMM and preboot functions.
I am posting here hoping somebody will be familiar with the process. I cannot use the latest and greatest upgrade system on my machine which is an IBM System x3400 M3 because it is too old for the newer on-line upgrades but I ma able to download the FixPack zip file and various individual fixes but cannot find the
UpdateXpress System Pack Installer
The installation instructions include:-
You install UpdateXpress System Packs using the UpdateXpress System Pack
Installer. For a complete description of the Installer and its use, see
the IBM UpdateXpress System Pack Installer User’s Guide.
You must first download the UpdateXpress System Pack you want to apply
to your system. In general, the scenario for downloading systems packs
is as follows:
Download the UpdateXpress System Pack for the desired
machine-type/operating system combination into a local or
network-shared directory.
Download the latest UpdateXpress System Pack Installer into the
directory where the system packs reside.
Run the installer. NOTE: Before running the installer, close all programs and
Dialog boxes that may be open, such as any “New Hardware Found” Windows dialogs.
The whereabouts of the installer is not obvious to me, in fact I cannot find it at all. Any ideas would be much appreciated.
Not apparent from what I can see in that they offer Windoze, RHEL and SLES but only the individual components not the installer itself. Hope somebody knows more. I am meanwhile trying to re-connect with IBM as they have changed their system significantly since I had a “IBM Passport.”
Hi Malcolm,
All the component files are available but not the installer file. I shall try a couple of individual files and see if they come as bootable installation files.
Access to the all the files except the installer is now easily available but I still cannot access the Forum site. My Passport Advantage account went the way of the brown ball and there have been various changes to the system as it moved from IBM to Lenovo but in fact the stuff I need is at IBM Fix Central website. If I enter my machine ID=7379ZY7 - KD5V45W ie. model - s/n in the Lenovo server data center support site this gives me a link which takes me directly to the IBM Fix Central site for my machine.
I have downloaded the UpdateExpress System Pack using the zip file method but I wonder if I get the installer if I use the Download Director which requires javaws. Is there any way of running javaws or do I have to use an Iced Tea equivalent? Just a thought.
Hi Malcolm,
I am not so sanguine, particularly over the IMM and EFI upgrades and also cannot see the BIOS proper anywhere.
My concern is that some of these must be independent of OS because they work before any OS is installed. I assume these are the “noarch” files
The issue about the IMM & EFI are the conditions for using the upgrade because the application is dependant on which system is already installed. The conditions are all in the texts.
A good start would be how can I find the IMM version which is installed. I looked through the info on the BIOS setup screen but no indication of IMM versions there. Any ideas where?
I was a bit premature and have now read the texts for IMM again. Still no sign of BIOS but I think it is now a matter of careful study, study some more and then run the IMM installation.
I note that the kernels are for SLES 11 and present kernels on Leap 15.3 are well beyond. There is even an offer to build for a different kernel from binaries which I pray will not be needed!
Stuck already!
First I note that the set of files I have from the zip file download from IBM FixCentral are slightly different from those downloaded with DownloadDirector.
Starting with IMM, there are two groups of four files for the IMM from DownloadDirector:-
ibm_fw_imm_yuoo57h_linux_32-64
and
ibm_fw_imm_yuoog2c-1.42_linux_32-64
Reading the texts it would be safest to use the “yuoo57h” version first as I understand this is required before the second update.
When I try and run the file from cli I have:-
alastair@localhost:~/DownloadDirector> sudo ./ibm_fw_imm_yuoo57h_linux_32-64.bin -s
sudo: ./ibm_fw_imm_yuoo57h_linux_32-64.bin: command not found
alastair@localhost:~/DownloadDirector>
I had already checked that the connection had been made for the usb network connection:-
But I am not sure if the connection is working because unfortunately my network adaptors have a dhcp but my network is on subnet starting 192.168.xxx.xxx.
I had previously been able to have a usb network connection but that was several builds ago when trying to use one of the automated tools.
There is an option to use the default IP address of the IMM which the text tells me is 192.168.70.125 but I cannot ping it from cli. Could it be a firewall issue?
This update is packaged as a self-extracting shell script. This package must be run on a ext2 or ext3 filesystem. You must be logged in as root.
I hope that since I am not running on ext2 or ext3 the on-line system will work but who knows.
Of course I could re-install my OS on an ext3 file system. I might even be able to downgrade to an earlier system but hope none of this is the going to be necessary.
I mistyped the IP and my usb network connection is fine.
I do not understand why I cannot run the binary. I can see the file and am working as root but I still have:-
localhost:/home/alastair/DownloadDirector # ./ibm_fw_imm_yuoo57h_linux_32-64.bin -s
-bash: ./ibm_fw_imm_yuoo57h_linux_32-64.bin: No such file or directory
localhost:/home/alastair/DownloadDirector #
I found the USB network connection thus:-
localhost:/home/alastair/DownloadDirector # ip address

But if I enter the address 169.254.95.120/24 in my browser It will not connect, switches to https:// and then get the “Unable to connect” message.
It is possible that my site firewall which sits between my networks and the WAN could be blocking but I would usually get an error message or warning. In any event surely running the file should give me some sort of result. I must be losing it.
Hi Svyatco and many thanks for the links which seem to take me to the same place that I found.
Unfortunately none of the instructions to install these fixes work for me. I have the USB network connection working and have tried running the commands but these fail. I am unable to open a web page for the IMM connection either. Malcolm has, I believe, found the same problem. If you can add further info please do.
Been through it all again but cannot see any update or upgrade options in the BIOS screens anywhere. Also Diagnostics, which is supposed to start from the PreBoot Screen doesn’t run.
