Hardcore wireless/networking guru needed... :-)

Hi guys,

I’ve already posted about this in the Internet/Networking forum, so apologies for the double-post. I’m just not having much luck there, and I’m pretty much ready to throw-in-the-towel and install a different OS, but before I do that, I just wanted to check and make sure there wasn’t some hardcore wireless guru lurking around here, who hadn’t seen my post yet, and might be able to help solve the problem! I’m really reluctant to give up on OpenSUSE for some reason, however it’s looking more and more like I don’t have a choice.

:frowning:

Anyway, you can find all of the details here:

Problems setting up OpenSUSE - Internet + wireless

If anyway is able to help I’d be VERY thankful. I do appreciate that you do this stuff in your own time, off your own back.

Cheers!

I don’t know what hours they keep, but IRC #suse are very helpful.

Not a Guru, but this might help. I just put a new, fresh install of OpenSuse 11.3 on an HP with the same LAN card. (r8111b/8168). It looks like (on the screenshot) you’ve got the open-source r8189 driver installed. You might want to try building the proprietary r8168 driver. Source from here:Realtek

I had luck with that driver.

I also had a stranger problem: the card was set from install to be controlled by ifup, not KNetworkManager. After a few hours of beating my head, I figured that out. After I changed it in YAST > Network Settings > Global Options, it connected without a problem.

Thanks mate, I will check that out but I want to try and get the wireless going first. I did find some interesting stuff after playing around with it today.

Here is the outputs after I followed the sticky thread about getting your wireless to work.

The kernel output stuff, I doubt any of it is relevant (I suspect it’s mostly about my DVD/audio), but I just pasted anything that mentioned realtek or 802.11:

Not Suse expert, but good with networking. If you are still attempting this, have you tried downloading new drivers from the manufacturer? I just upgraded to 11.3 and in order to get my bradcom wireless card to work I had to plug in to a wired network, download the latest Suse updates, add the Packman repo and get the wireless drivers from there to get mine to work, and I still have to use the google DNS. My root symptom was the inability to see any wireless networks around. The adapter was discovered but couldn’t find anything.
