Hi Guys,
This is an ongoing problem that has followed me from OpenSuse 10.3 through to the newly installed 11.1 (32bit)
Basically my Laptop HP Compaq 6710b produces hardlock ups (magic keys dont work). I can often reproduce this error by using OpenGL screensavers, also by leaving my laptop for long periods of time idle (over a couples of hours) I’ll come back and its hung, logs dont produce much:
On a side note, I feel that the graphics aren’t being accelerated as Solar winds screen saver is slow and jerky. (Yes enabled 3D acceleration is ticked in Sax).

Hello there,
I too experience the similar hard lock with my laptop - Panasonic Toughbook CF-18 - which is equipped with a i915GM graphics.
The hard lock happens mostly randomly. But usually related to graphical operations. Such as triggering the Application Switcher (set to cover switch) with Compiz causes my laptop to hard lock (non of the 3-finger-saluts or capslock etc. works).
I’m not quite sure where the problem lies. Consider i have been using Compiz/Beryl/CompizFusion and Linux with great deal of success and stability for over a year with Ubuntu Dapper (tho similar seems to happen too with the latest Kubuntu 8.10).
The desktop and applications integration and usability seems nice with this latest SuSE. But this hard lock issue is really ruining the party :\

This is the recurring message in the log when the crash happens:
Dec 22 11:37:15 shindo kernel: [drm:i915_getparam] *ERROR* Unknown parameter 5
I too am experiencing graphic lock ups with Desktop Effects, specifically the application switcher (all styles) and Show Desktop.
I am using a Lenovo ThinkPad T61 with the Intel 965GM

I had this problem with 10.3 OpenSuse also, I managed to get it stable by using the following xorg.conf.
I have now been running OpenSuSe 11.1 on my laptop of 30 hours by using the following xorg.conf
xorg.conf (Which is stable) for HP Compaq 6710b on OpenSuse 11.1

I had the same problem (lockups in Sauerbraten, torcs,…)
but then i added this to the device section:

also included the complete xorg.conf

Also did the same test on a fresh installed e6400.
Same results…both work now.

Interesting…
Option “AccelMethod” “XAA” produces the same crashes.
I am most stable using the xorg.conf that I posted, but still feel its not perfect…

I am experiencing the same issue (lockups while using compiz functions like the application switcher and cube rotation - before and after applying the “AccelMethod” “XAA” option) on a Dell Inspiron 1420 w/ Intel GM965 Graphics card while running the 11.1 32-bit Gnome Live CD. I did not think to run glxgears to check the framerate at the time (running 11.0 on my hard drive currently). Graphics performance has been pretty good in 11.0; I’m not sure why it is worse in 11.1…
Agreed. AccelMethod “XAA” not a fix. It seemed to run fine for a short period of time. I have noticed that the hardlocks seem to occur more when I have a JAVA application running.

It’s seems to me so far no real solution here on that.
I have gotten a new laptop with another Intel Integrated Graphics in it. This time it’s a 4500MHD. Performance is superb. But the problem still remain that certain animations in Compiz is making the system hardlock. Effects like window wobbly, shift switcher, desktop cube, expose. I guess this covers pretty much all animations that are “heavy”.
The light effects like transparency or open/close/focus/minimize window effects caused no crashes so far. Not on this 4500MHD nor on the old GMA900(915GM).

Apparently running GoogleEarth with “desktop effects” enabled also crashes the machine in the same way

Had the same problem even without desktop effects in
openSUSE 11.0 and this solution worked:
using opengl ( google earth ) hardlocks X on intel x3100 - openSUSE Forums
Although, I didn’t test it in 11.1 yet.

Thanks for that tip. It seems that trick helped many other users. But unfortunately it is still causing hard lock on this 4500MHD :\

Hi All,
It could be totally unrelated, but if running 11.1, have you tried updating your compiz packages using the X11 repo?
Also see this thread: Compiz lockup on Intel GMA 950 - openSUSE Forums
On a side note I was having issues with Java 1_6_0… I removed all the Java 1_6_0 packages and am running happily using the 1_5_0 version for the last 4,5 days… could be totally irrelevant, but seeing Java was mentioned in ‘suspicious tone’.
The compiz update and java downgrade where two things I did that seem to have resolved my X lockups.

Did anyone try this fix?? Let me know your results please:
Please Add This Into You Xorg.conf ( /etc/X11/xorg.conf ):
Option “AccelMethod” “exa”
Option “MigrationHeuristic” “greedy”
Option “ExaNoComposite” “false”
In The Section “Device” after “VendorName”
I ended up jumping ship as this was a show stopper for me.

If you have a lot of problems and want to solve them ASAP Try the packages in Index of /repositories/X11:/XOrg/openSUSE_11.1
But be carefull, because they are still not stable.
Best regards,
Tulio Magno

Yeah, tried that on the 4500MHD. Didn’t helped non at all. Enabling composite still causes stability problems.
Already have openSUSE Xorg repo added. Didn’t helped much, al tho i saw that there was a new xorg-x11-driver-video package last friday. Haven’t tried enabling composite using this new driver … but i have no idea or there is even new Intel graphics driver included. I doubt it since the new one need 2.6.28 for GEM+DRI2.
Off-topic: Anyone knows how to check the release date of a package? zypper if <packagename> doesn’t tell the packaging date.
I was having a horrible time with my onboard Intel with 11.1. I was having stalls and vsync being ignored on videos. What fixed things for me was installing Xorg from the mentioned repository AND building a 2.6.28 kernel. Things have been working great since with either EXA or UXA.
