Thinking of replacing my sataII hard drive with one of those 1TB ones, have you any recommendations?? My current is a Samsung Surespin, and I must admit that I do like them but I have been looking at Maxtor and Werstern Digital with a glance at Seagate!
I am currently running SuSE 11.1 64. I will just backup the home directory and do a fresh install!
hdd are a lottery but I had 3 seagate(all sata drives) and their lifetime was < 5 years. So now I’ve bought western digital and no problem at the moment.
I prefer raid edition like the RE3 hdd wich are in theory more robust.
I’ve always gone with WD when I can, and have never really had any issues. I just picked up a 1TB WD ‘Green Power’ hard drive and have installed OS 11.1 on it.
It’s not bad at all as far as performance goes (assuming you get the 32MB cache version, not the 16). I also use 2 Samsung drives in an external RAID setup, but am a bit nervous about their reliability.

another vote for WD’s - I have WD Raptor’s (10k rpm) on my box - they are
just a little fast

Seagates are bad.
Shoot even the 750G Seagate I own (less than a year old) is showing
smart errors (sigh).
I like my old Hitachi’s and my new 8 drive array at home uses
the WD Black 1TB’s. They’re a bit new to have any issue. Those
Hitachi’s are the old “hot” ones… I have an array with 42 of them,
been running for years, no issues.
