I dont know why opensuse 11 hangs when i tried to install some softwares…d after that its giving more problems to me…
when the yast installer hangs up …i cant even open the terminal to stop it.
so i restarted but from then next boot the desktop become a <WHITE SCREEN>wat to do?
Is repairing is the only solution?
That sounds like a video driver problem…
What software did you install? Specifying that should give some more clues on what when wrong…
If you have compiz enabled in your users environment you could try logging in as root (that probably still has compiz disabled) and will let you log in to correct the issue.
Next time when YaST hangs, press CTRL+ALT+Backspace to get rid of the X envoirment. Login through the console and then switch it back on with typing “startkde”, “kdeinit” or “startx”.
The good thing in Linux and other opensource operating systems is that everything can be repaired without the need to reinstall the whole OS.
It’s not a problem with the RPM packages or the graphic envoirment. This YaST bug is famous in SUSE 11 so try to install packages with the console rpm tool:“rpm -i example.rpm” or just install a new rpm package manager like Smart Package Manager, Zypper (which is included in the SuSE installation CD) or something like that.

never ever log into a gui, kdm, de, window manager, kde, ghome, what
ever as ROOT…NEVER

I do agree you should not use the root user as your common work environment. In this (test) case we are also talking desktop & well, there is being careful & there is… well, let’s call it overly careful. You also still install Linux in text mode too?

i do use the provided graphical installer…but, don’t have to 
however, i’m certain that one time (when i was a baby penguin) i needed
to do something that i couldn’t figure out how to do without using a gui
tool: i had to move some files from an old OS/2 Warp disk and into my
home directory (so i could continue the transition process we hope all
who come here from an operating system beginning with a W, M, U, D or
others will someday face)…and, i still do not know exactly how it
happened [because i was DAMN careful, and stayed root only as long as
absolutely necessary] but the permissions of and/or in my home directory
got subtly messed up…some things still worked right while i was logged
in as me, but some things were very strange–didn’t do at all what i’d
expected, or didn’t do anything at all, or threw up errors…
fortunately, i knew where a bunch of gray haired, old “Big Iron” types
hung out (in what is left of the now faintly known Byte Magazine online
forum) and i explained my baffling woes…
one of the guys knew immediately what to fix and how…told me how and
then said these wise words:
never ever use just ‘su’ to become root, ALWAYS use ‘su -’ (because
that gives you root’s environment) and,
never ever sign into any gui enviroment as root because if you do, you
WILL change the gui environment…
i say his words were ‘wise’ because i have not run again into those
extremely baffling problems (in about six years) that i see so many here
grapple with that magically go away when they sign into KDE as root…
ymmv…if you wish to encourage one way and me another, we do NOT have
to fight over it…ok?
and, now my hair is also gray :sad:
