Is there a guide to help me understand Docker? I get articles about it in my news feed but never anything that seems relevant to me. I run boinc and continually get a message that I need Docker to run somethings but I am not told what they are. The link boinc offers about Docker takes me to page that says use Podman instead of Docker. Boinc has been a little troublesome but I have it running without Docker.
So, my basic question is: beyond boinc, what do I need Docker for? I don’t use it or any VM and I want to know what I’m missing.
Thank you for this information. Outside of boinc, I see no use for Docker for myself. I looked at the links and installed Podman, which is preferred for boinc. Podman had no specific instructions for Tumbleweed but I ran these two lines that were listed for ubuntu and Redhat:
I then closed boinc manager and re-opened it. It took a moment to start but I see no difference other than one (not both) of the messages about Docker went away. I don’t even know if its running in Podman! On a side note: my menu has two entries for Boinc. The first one starts boinc manager but never connects to localhost. The second runs as normal. This makes me wonder if I should uninstall all files related to boinc and re-install with some connection to Podman.
