I’ve got a graphic user interface problem after upgrading from 11.2 to 11.3.
Much of the upgrade seems to have gone well. I tried first using YaST to upgrade. That didn’t seem to work so I downloaded the DVD and used that to upgrade. I’m writing this from within the new installation. But it only works in failsafe currently and at the wrong resolution. The normal booting option gives me a cli, not a gui.
I’ve spent some time reading the guides written by oldcpu among other things and I’ve tried a few things. The “nomodeset” option made no difference for me. Switching to xorg.conf.install didn’t work either, and it wouldn’t be a permanent solution either. I like to game sometimes and that means using the proprietary ati drivers (I have an ati radeon HD3850 card). I tried to run “aticonfig --initial” again with no success. I have not tried editing xorg.conf because I’m not sure what exactly is causing the problem.
I haven’t tried uninstalling the ati proprietary drivers, then reinstalling. I don’t know if this would help. Don’t want to lose what I still have.
I could live with this more easily if I could use “configure desktop” to change the monitor’s resolution to the correct one. However the only options available to me there are 1400 x 1050 or “disabled”. My monitor should be 1680 x 1050. I don’t know what choosing “disabled” will do but it sounds risky.
I’m hoping that there’s a simple solution to this. Would posting my xorg.conf file be useful?
Then reboot to X (using fail safe) and copy the contents of each of those files: dmesg.txt, xorg.0.log, xsession-errors.txt (associated with your failed boot) from your /home/your-user-name to pastebin website and press submit and post here the URL/address given to you for each of the 3 files? (put them all on separate pages to make it easier to examine them).
Also, can also you copy and post the content of your /boot/grub/menu.lst file to pastebin website and press submit on that page and then post here the address/URL it gives? I want to confirm you do not have any appropriate boot options for your regular boot. You will need to open up menu.lst with root permissions in order to copy its contents. PLEASE be careful NOT to change anything in that file when you open it up (any such failure to do so could stop your PC from rebooting properly).
Another thought. … Do you actually have an xorg.conf file ? If so, please move it to a different name (say xorg.conf.oldfile) and then reboot with no xorg.conf file. Does that work ?
Thanks for the help. Here are the files you requested. I was not sure how to open the menu.lst file. I navigated to the folder it was in and then opened a terminal, then used the command “edit” to open the file. I don’t know if this was right, but it produced something. I simply copied the resulting text.
I hope these are helpful. I’ve never used that site before.
I did find something in the Xorg.0.log. It tells me that it can’t load the fglrx_drv.so . The previous line mentions an “undefined symbol: resVgaShared”
Googling that phrase gives me a lot of stuff that seems pertinent (including stuff from these forums), but much of it is beyond my current ability to understand or feel comfortable trying right now.
What that .log file seems to say is that it can’t run the current proprietary drivers. That suggests to me I should uninstall them. However, I’m going to try to rename the xorg.conf file and see what happens first. I’ll post the results of that when I’m done.
Ok, it worked. I no longer need to use the failsafe. I renamed Xorg.conf using a terminal. That seems to have fixed it. I’ve got the proper resolution and stuff. Games don’t work properly yet so my graphics problems aren’t completely fixed. Maybe reinstalling the drivers will fix that. If there is anything else that you can tell me that might be helpful I’d be grateful but it’s working mostly. Thanks a lot for the help oldcpu.
I think it is just a matter of time (maybe 2 to 3 months) and ATI will come out with a new graphic driver that should work better than than the radeon driver in your hardware.
