GUI but no login box?

Hello,

I have a new 11.2 SUSE installation. I have been setting up Kiwi LTSP on it. After a restart, the system comes back up with the green background image, but instead of the usual login box, I have a grey box with nothing in it. I cannot log in with the GUI. If i switch to ttys1 I have an error about “too many forks, we’re confused” but I understand this is not related.

How can I get my GUI login back? :frowning:

new one on me…if it worked correctly initially that means you
probably had a good install, but let me ask anyway: did you do this
http://tinyurl.com/yajm2aq before install attempt? if not you may
have a faulty install disk in which case you need to start over…ask
how first! i have some hints…

but, if it was a good install and it “got broke” during setting up of
whatever Kiwi LTSP is it probably means you (somehow) damaged the
system…

did you do a system backup prior to “setting up”?

you might try inserting the install dvd and booting from it, do the
media check thing and if it passes then do the “Repair Installed
System” thing…sometimes that script will detect and repair what was
damaged…sometimes not…

when if you post again you might mention something about the system
you are using, the hardware, your experience with linux etc etc etc
otherwise we have to wonder if we need to write “in a root terminal
enter” or if you need directions on what a terminal is, who root is,
how to open a terminal blah blah blah…

and, give the exact error message you see…
and, have you checked /var/log/* for hints?

Thanks.

After rebooting in Failsafe mode, I ran Software Update and after this, the server rebooted fine.
