Does anyone know whether gspca is available for OpenSuSE 11.2? I can’t find it in any of the repos, and all my attempts to use the factory and the 11.0 versions are not working. I don’t care if it is pae or xen… I just need one. Otherwise, I have to buy a new webcam. Anyone know the best one to use for OpenSuSE 11.2? Must be logitech though
The GSPCA drivers are now part of the kernel itself.

I think gspca should now be included as part of the kernel. If you know your webcam is supported by gspca, but it does not work on openSUSE-11.2, then you could try writing a bug report against openSUSE-11.2. Be certain to provide in the bug report the device and vendor-ID of your webcam (you can get that by typing: lsusb ).
Guidance on writing a bug report: Submitting Bug Reports - openSUSE
They have simplified what is required when writing a bug report.
Beaten to the punch by Chrysantine!
… one thing I forgot to ask. … I assume because you are asking for the gspca for openSUSE-11.2, you believe your webcam is not working. If so, what applications did you use to test it? What is the vendor ID and device ID ?
Hi All. Thanks for the prompt replies. Kudos.
Ok, so they are there… I did see it being detected in dmesg. Thanks Chrysantine.
Oldcpu, yes it doesn’t work. I used to have it working in 10.3 and 11.0 when I had to install it separately. Here’s the details:
Bus 004 Device 002: ID 046d:08d9 Logitech, Inc. QuickCam IM/Connect
Ok , lets make an assumption, or better called, an hypothesis, that we could end up proving wrong, that the gspca kernel module is working, and the problem is in the 11.2 build of the application you are using to play the webcam.
So lets see if we can prove this hypothesis right or wrong.
To do that, you need to answer this question:
Did you try seeing if the program “amsn” will show a video ? No need to join MSN, just run the program and go to Account > Prefences > Other > Audio and Video Settings … and setup your webcam, stopping as soon as you get a pix, or you go beyound the point where the pix is to occur. Also try some other apps … Let us know what you tried and what you did not.
Also ensure you have libv4l installed BEFORE doing any tests.
Ok, So I installed amsn and checked if it worked there… it did! Albeit, a bit choppy. I admit I was surprised.
The aim is to get it to work in skype and in gqcam. It doesn’t work in either of these. I also tried cheese. Also doesn’t work.
Thanks for your support.
I don’t use skype. I don’t think gqcam is built yuet for 11.2
I note cheese is mostly a gnome app ? I think to get cheese running you may need to install the correct gstreamer and v4l apps, and I can not advise you as to which one because I do not know…
OK, I have cheese running, but I also have to say I am not certain exactly what did it. Was it a combination of things, or one thing in particular.
I initially tried the v4l/gstreamer approach noted above. I carefully tuned my gstreamer to be packman packaged apps and also installed the packman packaged v4l (even though there is a newer OSS package). I installed “gnome-media” so I could play with its application “gstreamer-properties”, but all “gstreamer-properties” when run did was just confirm I had video coming in (which I knew already from amsn) but no video going out (which I knew already from cheese). I messed around a bit, gave up, and made the above post.
I then decided I wanted camorama installed. But I noted there was no camorama packaged since openSUSE-11.0 !! I went to the camorama site, and noted version 0.19 was the last version … but then that rang a bell, as camorama-0.19-2.42 was also the 11.0 version of camorama in OSS. So I downloaded the openSUSE-11.0 rpm .src file from OSS for camorama, and typed:
rpmbuild --rebuild camorama-0.19-2.42.src.rpm
and it complained I was missing a BUNCH of dependencies.
So I installed
libgnomeui-devel-2.24.2-2.3 Tue 24 Nov 2009 09:52:13 PM CET
libgnome-devel-2.28.0-2.4 Tue 24 Nov 2009 09:52:12 PM CET
libbonoboui-devel-2.24.2-2.3 Tue 24 Nov 2009 09:52:12 PM CET
gnome-keyring-devel-2.28.0-3.5 Tue 24 Nov 2009 09:52:10 PM CET
libbonobo-devel-2.24.2-2.1 Tue 24 Nov 2009 09:52:09 PM CET

audiofile-devel-0.2.6-147.2 Tue 24 Nov 2009 09:52:08 PM CET
libtasn1-devel-2.2-2.2 Tue 24 Nov 2009 09:52:07 PM CET
popt-devel-1.13-4.2 Tue 24 Nov 2009 09:52:06 PM CET
libv4l-devel-0.5.9-10.pm.12.1 Tue 24 Nov 2009 09:42:30 PM CET
libv4l-0.5.9-10.pm.12.1 Tue 24 Nov 2009 09:42:30 PM CET
to meet the dependencies.
I also installed:
zvbi-0.2.33-2.1 Tue 24 Nov 2009 09:40:27 PM CET
because I liked what it said about handling video.
I then reran the
rpmbuild --rebuild camorama-0.19-2.42.src.rpm
and it built camorama. I then installed the rebuilt rpm (which for those who do not now are stored under /usr/src/packages/RPMS/ … ) . I ran camorama and I had a neat image from my webcam.
Then I pondered this a bit, and wondered if in all my messing around, cleaning up and re-installing somewhere in the vicinity of 40 apps (mostly gstreamer and v4l), if I had installed enough rpms for mencoder to work with my webcam, where it had failed before when I tried last night, giving me only an ugly green screen. So I went to webcam & microphone command line fun … - openSUSE Forums and tried the mencoder and mplayer commands and they worked (last night, they did not). So I had obviously installed something to make them work.
Then I asked myself, could cheese be working now? So I ran “cheese” and sure enough, it worked.
My apologies for the fuzziness of this. I hate it when people do this to me, so I sympathize.
Since I had given up on “cheese” working, I did not keep notes for it. Hence I can not point to a specific application and say - THIS fixed it.
Just to horrify you, this is the "rpm -qa | grep last " record of my clean up. Many of the below were already installed, but I cleaned up the vendor.

Too bad. Did you try running gstreamer-properties to configure openSUSE for the webcam ?
