Grub to first sector boot partition install

Hi, I want to install Opensuse 11 from the live cd disk. During the
installation I do not see the option of installing grub to the
first sector of the boot partition, rather than the MBR. I am
installing to the second drive with XP on the first drive, which
is why I don’t want grub installed to the MBR; I will use dd later.
I have only been able to find how to change the grub location after
the opensuse installation completes after searching Google. Thanks

Just install grub to the mbr of the 2nd drive and set the 2nd drive as first to boot in bios
remember to set a mount point for windows in setup like this: /windows

I mentioned that I did not want to install to the MBR. Did your reply mean
that it isn’t possible to install grub to the first sector of the boot partition during
the original installation? I wasn’t asking for a recommendation, but for exactly
instructions on how to accomplish what I specifically asked for. I don’t know
what part of my post indicated that I was asking for advice on how to do something
which I said I did not want to do, install to the MBR. I did not give my reason,
so you are in no position to assume you know what is best for my true goal. I
asked on this forum because I didn’t find the information in swerdna’s guides.
I’m not new to Linux and most distros offer the method I inquired about.

To me, this implied that you felt by installing grub to the MBR it would affect XP.

You didn’t imply that there was something else on the 2nd drive which would prevent you from placing grub on the MBR there.

It is possible to write a boot section to the windows boot.ini
pointing to your /boot of linux root

I’m fasting for a blood test and my blood sugar is low and I’m irritable.
“It is possible to write a boot section to the windows boot.ini

excellent tutorial and I’ve use this method before.
Boot Multiboot openSUSE Windows (2000, XP, Vista - any mix) with Windows bootloader.
To do that, one must install grub to the first sector of the boot partition.
Most distros allow for that during the install and I don’t like a developer
philosophy which doesn’t provide for it during the initial installation. Even
Ubuntu had it hidden under “Advanced”. So I spent some time looking for
this method although I didn’t read anything thick. I didn’t see how to do it
even under the Opensuse live cd Expert options. It happens to matter to me.

During the install, after all the detection, there will be a page with initial recommendations, one of which is “bootloader”. Click on that to change the recommendation. Up at the top will be tabs, one of which will display all the locations where you can tell SuSE to install the bootloader.

You have complete control;)

Thank you. I had seen such a bootloader setup screen for Opensuse 10.2 or 10.3
but didn’t know if it had been removed for the Opensuse 11 live cd installation.

The setup had gotten to the point where it seemed like it was done asking any
questions and was ready to start the install. Thanks again for your clarification.

I haven’t used this: but I notice that during the installation dialogue for live DVD – on the screen that contains final options for your approval – there’s a “boot loader” link whereby the screen opens with two tabs viz Section Management and Boot Loader Installation. The latter gives an option to boot from partitions instead of from the Master Boot Record. If you choose the Boot Partition or other, you will need to click also the button “Boot Loader Options” and Set active flag plus write generic code to the MBR.

Something along those lines.
