Grub theme changed on its own

Hi all,

I dual boot OpenSUSE 12.2 x64 (upgraded from 12.1) with KDE 4.9.3 and Windows 7 Professional. Just a few minutes ago, Windows froze after login so I had to do a hard reboot. However that’s not what concerns me-- after the abrupt shutdown, my grub theme is changed. The menu is the same, with the same entries, default, and timer. But instead of the green openSUSE logo it’s now animated with small penguins walking in a snowy scene.

Is this somehow automatic? As far as I know, Windows can’t touch grub, and I haven’t booted into OpenSUSE in a few days. Right now, I’m absolutely terrified.

It’s obviously a virus. JUST KIDDING! rotfl! It is normal in December for openSUSE GRUB to occasionally boot up with the penguin animation. For details, have a look at: https://en.opensuse.org/SDB:Animated_penguin_GRUB_splash_screen . It’s openSUSE’s way of bringing some cheer into everyone’s life in the run up to Christmas :).

Thank you for the info. I may look at changing the probability a little higher. Now that I know it’s normal, I rather like it. Just another reason why OpenSUSE is the best distro out of the three-ish I’ve used.

YaY! you were hit by the December penguin virusrotfl!. I got one today.

I’ll miss that now that I’m using grub2

Congrats, you are the first one reporting that this year. I refuse to search through the forums to see if you beat the reports of last year and the year before, and … But you are in any case near to a record.

I’ll fire up the GIMP and make myself a plaque. Earliest Christmas-penguin report :).

rotfl! Please post the result when you are ready

Seen any “How do I get penguins in GRUB2?” threads ? IMHO December’s missing something this year

My thoughts too  …so how…

I have the penguins! I have the penguins! rotfl!lol!

But I use GRUB Legacy. GRUB2 gives me pathological resolutions in the tty1-6 terminals. If they can fix the penguins for you then they can fix the resolution for me!

Speaking of the penguins, does anyone have a non-copyrighted penguin image that I can use in my plaque? Preferably two-tone black & white that I can adapt.

P.S. I got the penguins again when I booted up a few minutes ago. Two earliest sightings, perhaps?

There’s probably one available under a Creative Commons license - whether
it’s copyrighted or not doesn’t really matter for personal use like this,
nor if it’s licensed for free use with reasonable terms (such as
attribution).

I was just making sure to not get sued. Anyway, I’ve got one and finished my masterpiece :).

It’s very basic and harder to read than I anticipated. Alas, I’m not that good with the GIMP. I’m an Engineer, not an artist.

Hi,
You did a good job.

This link does not realy give me what I expected. In any case: enjoy your Penguins :shake:

I thought penguins were outlawed on Skydrive :D. If I was a penguin on Skydrive I would feel endangered

I think usually the only time that becomes an issue is if you tried to
monetize something that was created with commercial licensing available.

Or when dealing with people who don’t understand what copyright is/is
not.

OK, time fir a wee bit of humbuggery…!

I really like SuSE, it’s got it’s flaws (far less of course than the dreaded redmond offerings) and it suffers from some of those global issues which affect all OS’es, such as the update/patch delivery etc. However I am stunned that, those fine folk who produce such a wonderful array of resources (i.e. The SuSE distro folk) and with such diligent attention to such things as cultural and language diversity, and general system security, would choose to replace my boot screen, without my knowledge never mind my consent! It is beyond my obviously limited intelligence to see what grand plan or design such a thing serves, but to me, and perhaps to others, it is not good. It is not funny or cute nor does it in any way enhance my usage or my general appreciated of openSuSE, quite the contrary.

Of course (and I thank Henk above for the link to penguin extinction) this must be taken in context. It’s not malicious, it’s not nasty in any way, it’s well intentioned, however it is also not good. At best it can be considered a well intentioned practical joke, at worst…well that depends on the end user, and there are so many, with so many different ideas about what is considered well intention and in good taste.

The obvious way to avoid such unnecessary conflict among such a diverse user base is to release with default options set to something like…
‘gfxboot --change-config penguin=0’

rather than the current default which I assume is -1, flagging that oh so nice ‘**** I’ve got a christmas virus’ feeling which just makes ones day! A note could be placed on the Welcome screen or in some place to advise the user that there is a ‘Christmas Surprise’ option or whatever, there are many ways it could be done.

Anyway, it’s just my opinion. I don’t like it, I think it is a poorly conceived idea and one that has a distinctly ‘Bill’ odour. Have the good folk of SuSE perhaps employed any retired, Seattle based hacks lately? I hope not, as I would not like to see openSuSE end up like a mobile phone interface. Have you seen Win8? All linux distros should be over the moon as those idiots at MS have finally done it this time. Win7 was their best ever OS, but one always knew that with historical perspective, that it was likely to be followed by one of their worst. Yep, I think they’ve actually done just that.

So there you have it. As far as I’m concerned the penguins suck, but I do like openSuSE, and of course I’ve loved Linux for a long time and actually recall that original post of Linus’s so long ago. Maybe I’m just getting old and grumpy, but please do not stuff with my system behind my back, it’s offensive even though well intentioned!

Regards,
Michael.j.Falconer.

Try to learn it yourself before the end of the year, with some training it must be possible: openSUSE.
