Grub menu 2 many characters

Ok so this is not a major thing but just my obervation:

After an update grub shows witch version of kernel is instaled and now it shows “Desktop – openSUSE 11.2 - 2.6.31.5-0.1” and the rotating thingy that counts down is on top of the last numbers. I have a 1280x1024 rez on a 19’’
Its not pretty :stuck_out_tongue: and I demand to be fixed rotfl!

I wouldnt normaly post a thing like this but i rememberd an annoyance with the kernel version showing up after an update. Its a trivial thing to customise it but why should it be there. I just like “openSUSE XX.X” clean and simple. There is a kernel number in sysinfo:/ and many places. If openSUSE wonts to be a mainstream it should drop the tech numbers and (in a previous post) warn if x11 files get updated you shuld reinstall grafics drivers

Please dont take this too serious, just my 2 cents

You’re kidding, right?

Kernel version “must” be displayed in Grub’s menu as people with several
kernels installed need to know what kernel they are going to boot.

At least this should be the default. People who doesn’t like this behavior
always can (manually or by using YaST) edit the “menu.lst” entries.

What about the rotating counter? No thoughts on that?

You are right, it’s no pretty.

But…If you would have a 12 inch notebook, you’d understand the problem. The counter would either go off screen, or move to the next line, which would arise new questions from users.
So widening the space for the item-title doesn’t solve things. Maybe putting the counter in front (i.e. left) of the item line?

In the meantime, you could do one of these two:
kdesu ‘kwrite /boot/grub/menu.lst’
gnomesu ‘kwrite /boot/grub/menu.lst’
and remove the kernel-version numbers from the ‘title’ line. That would make it look better until next kernel change.
