GRUB FAIELD - HELLLLP

I just tried to dual boot my main PC, a desktop and the GRUB FAILED and now I can’t access Window OR Linux.

I do know that during the install process, linux told me "Th bootloader is installed on a partition that does not lie entirely below 128 GB. The system might not boot - what can I do about this?

My PC has everything on on it!!

I am not an experienced penguin and have absolutely no idea what to do.

Boot from a liveCD and post the output of this command here :

fdisk -l

Best regards,
Greg

Download this - burn it to a cd and boot from it
Download Parted Magic

Once you boot it:
How to use Parted Magic

Get me the result of this:

fdisk -l

post the result here

linux:/home/linux # fdisk -l

Run “file -s /dev/sd*” on the console of a rescue or live linux system and
post the result here between code tags (1) or into opensuse pastebin
(http://paste.opensuse.org/).

If that is not enough, you might have to run the script here: >

And then download syslinux, it is a boot loader for linux. Fix your problem with this cd who suggest you caf4926 and then download syslinux to fix your boot. This cd includes a programm who you repair your grub bootloader, it is about for first boot fixing.

I discovered an oversight on my part, I inadvertently installed the 32 bit version - shouldn’t make a difference should it?

At any rate, wouldn’t it be better to just start over with the 64 bit version and just delete the 32 bit partition and try to fix this during installation?

linux:/home/linux # file -s /dev/sd
/dev/sd: cannot open `/dev/sd' (No such file or directory)

Are You sure You installed openSUSE because You have only NTFS partitions from which AFAIK linux kernel can’t boot ? Don’t delete any partitions yet.

I did install linux once and then tried to install it again but aborted the install before it got started - it may be that the linux partition has already been deleted - as I said, I am NOT an experienced penguin

I think it wasn’t created. Can You boot Windows now ?

There is no Linux installation there
Your windows partitions are OK - What version of windows?

There is no Linux on your system. Te only thing you have to do imho is repairing the MBR. That is a Windows thing that I know nothing of, but others here can tell you. If you at lest tell what Windows yu think you have.

No, I get grub error

windows 7 ultimate

You manged to install the boot loader part of grub to the MBR but you have no Linux partitions to actually boot.

You should be able to reinstall/fix the Windows boot loader from the Windows Disk

You can use Neosmart windows recovery disc which is best out there to fix your mbr and boot from windows. Then start over with your linux install following the guides on this forum.

Neosmart

Good luck.

Yes, this is good if you don’t have the win7 DVD

ok, I managed to got the windows MBR repaired and now have that back but I still want to dual boot this machine
