I’m trying to upgrade grub from 0.97 to 1.96 so that I can boot to a HFS hard disk, but so far everything I’ve tried has not overwritten the old partition… I compiled/installed a tarball of the latest version and also got an RPM copy and -Uhv installed it. Both installations gave no errors. I’m running openSuSE 11.1 - my first time with openSuSE so I’m not that familiar with the specifics of this distro.

Grub 2 gets descibed as “not enterprise ready”.
What architecture are you using? Do you just want to zero out the disk, or do you care to use non native partition and filesystems later?
I’m wondering if some of the Disk Maintenance / Rescue type Live CDs would let you prepare the disk, so that install works without tinkering.
It’s quite brave to start upgrading the boot loader, first time out. You’ll be boldly going, where noone has trod before.
