I have been using openSUSE for a LONG time and have put up with a number of niggles when I’ve not been able to work around them, but recent changes have been more irritating.
Setup on the desktop development machine is
Tumbleweed 20250610
KDE Plasma 6.3.5
KDE Frameworks 6.14.0
Qt Version 6.9.1
Kernel 6.14.5-1-default
Graphics X11
Running on a Micro-Star Motherboard using AMD Ryzen 5 5600G with Radeon Graphics
Today this is targeting a pair of 4k Samsung 32" monitors.
The latest problem is that after dropping into screensave mode, when reopening all the open windows get pushed to the left monitor and some get cropped to quarter screen on the top right of that monitor. I’m seeing some reports of this problem which point to kscreen, but I’m not seeing files that ‘fixes’ suggest? I am sure part of this is down to the way the graphics system tries to be TOO cleaver and the way each monitor switches back on determines just where windows are left. In the past I used dongles that pretended that the monitors were still attached which worked well, but with HDMI this is a little more difficult although the third monitor which is on a KVM switch still has a VGA one.
It would be nice to be able to simply lock the screen layout as we used to be able to many moons ago?
Also linked to that is the difficulty in getting windows using different graphics libraries to display at the same resolution. This was even more difficult when the second monitor was only HD which is part of the reason I saved up for a second 4K one. I think that I need to cull all the old stuff and start with a single stable screen layout, but it seems that nothing is actually stable?
You’re on kernel 6.14 so you’re at least two kernels behind. If you’re running 20250610 you should be on your second kernel 6.15 which is 6.15.1-1.
If you’ve been updating with zypper up that might explain why you’re not completely updated. Always update with zypper dup
Also, there’s a new GUI update application called Myrlyn that’ll do zypper dup so you don’t have to use the terminal anymore.
But this time use the terminal so you can see everything that’s happening.
The second issue might be X11. Try using Wayland. Wayland has improved considerably and may fix all of your issues but you need to make sure you’re fully updated first.
Actually most of the time just leaving it to ‘Discovery’ which hits hundreds of updates at times. zypper dup gave a few bits, but no kernel update however then discovery decided it needed a restart … which it does from time to time … and promptly locked up solid this time. So power down and up, and we have kernel 6.15.1 … machine has been restarted but obviously needs a full power cycle now and again. Reminds me of good old windows … try switch it off and on.
Had a another look while playing with restarts. Back on X11 so I can actually see things like the icons on Firefox, and why does the start menu disappear up the screen. The couple of apps in tried that don’t display properly in X11 are just as bad on wayland … or more so. I’m used to X11 and have it reasonably under control … even if font and icon sizes are a nightmare.
You must update Tumbleweed with zypper dup. It’s a “Distribution Upgrade” not just an “update”. Using Discover explains your “growing number of problems”.
You’ll like Myrlyn, it looks very much like YaST Software. It’ll do zypper dup from the GUI and it’s going to be the standard upgrade/update method in TW and Leap. YaST is depreciated so they’re working on replacements. There’s an Updates Tab and a “Dist-Upgrade” button in Myrlyn. That’s the equivalent of zypper dup (dup means Distribution Upgrade).
EDIT: Hui informed me that Myrlyn is in the official repos now.
From there you’re ready to go and won’t need to use the terminal to run zypper unless you have serious issues. When Discover says you have updates, check and install them with the “Dist-Upgrade” button in Myrlyn.
Wayland may take a little configuration that’s different from X. I used X until it had too many problems and at that time (about a year ago) Wayland had improved to the point that it’s actually nice.
Have been using X for so many years and not just in linux that will be a more difficult one to switch, but the agro caused by differing ways of fixing the font and icon sizes may be a reason. When I tried earlier Firefox displayed with tool bars half the size I have on X … with the rendered pages too big … and other apps have similar discrepancies, such as the icons in Eclipse … but then I still switch KDE back to what I was used to in the early 90’s
Now THAT I do like myrlyn is nicely showing what needs up and what dup! The only thing I still have a bit of a problem with is not being able to see just what an update includes which is a bit hit and miss in Discovery as well. At least with the likes of PHP I know what to check post and update.
wayland is still back burner, but my main niggle with X11 or is it KDE is the top windows bar icons are too small. Plastik is at least usable, but is half the size that would be a match for the rest of the window! Some of my key applications such as Flamerobin retain that small size for the whole window and since I have the source for that I should have a look fixing it, but that perhaps should not be necessary? The main problem is knowing just where to look to manually fix the differences between apps If I spend time digging into ‘Windows Decorations’ would I be able to at least create a custom theme with bigger top bar icons?
Try other Window Decorations, Breeze and Oxygen for example. There’s button on the preview that’ll give you a popup with “Button Size” and other options. You can get other decorations.
Check the mailing list for what’s included in TW updates. The mailing list is not for reporting bugs. Bugzilla is for reporting bugs.
There’s a link to the mailing list info posted in the forum every time there’s an update. Sometimes you’ll see the update before it shows up on the mailing list or forum, but just wait if you want to know before you update.
No ‘Button size’ on my tab in settings, only a list of options for ‘windows size’ and options to edit what buttons are displayed. I know in the past I have see a ‘size’ button, but not for some time
OK this is where some sort of consistency would help Found the ‘edit’ button in the previews, and Breeze does have the option, but the text on the title bar is still very small. Still something else on the list to play with … and it still does not fix other areas which need proper scaling …
And while there is an entry for ‘windows title’ it does not make any difference to the title on the windows I am looking at. While it is irritating, I can live with it so am happy with still running X11. I will have another go with wayland when time permits, but like all of this it just detracts from getting on with some productive work.
At least myrlyn IS a nice productive step forward … even if it’s title is miniscule … thanks for that poke!
