My test pc platform is currently loaded with 12.1, KDE4.8.3 and has Nvidia GPU.
The Nvidia driver (I use James’ lnvhw script) is up to date and most recent version.
I can’t seem to get rid of this, and for some reason I now can’t log in thru it.
This greeter appeared way back when I loaded the final 12.1 RC release, at the time it was a known issue and just a nuisance.
I have updated all my repositories, updated all files and this remains, so clearly there is a config somewhere that is stuck.
I am able to log into the Terminal (ctl-alt-F1) and a vncserver that starts at boot on screen :1 works fine.
Any idea what this greeter version is called?
I could then search config files and see what might be stuck
If you want to change to another login manager, edit
“/etc/sysconfig/displaymanager”, and change the settings of DISPLAYMANAGER.
Normal values are ‘gdm’ if you prefer KDE, and ‘gdm’ if you like GDM. At
the moment, you are probably using ‘xdm’.

Either something else is broken, or the password is wrong. Can you log in
text mode?

Oops. Yes, right.

Mmmm. Broken install. Posibly kdm4 is missing from your installation, so
the system defaults to xdm. Check it.

Since my settings were the same as yours,I started nosing around again in the logs. I noticed that the last date for /var/log/kdm.log was Jan 20, 2012, which is probably the date I upgraded from 11.4 to the 12.1 RC.
Things did not look right in /usr/share/kde4/config/kdm directory, so I tried to run genkdmconf. Command not found! Ahh, smoking gun.
Somehow I have been “just fine, almost” with no kdm package installed.
As I mentioned, I use vnc mostly to interface with this machine, it did not care.
kdm now installed and up to date, all Greets well.
