Graphic, sound and chipset drivers

Hello,

I’m totally new to Linux, as well as Suse. I just installed Suse11.3 on my Acer Aspire 9410 and I’m having trouble figuring out how to find and install the sound, video and chipset drivers. I visited Acer’s website but they only supported MS software.

Does anyone know where I could find these drivers and dummy directions for their installation?

Many thanks,

Kevin

I am afraid you should be more specific. Which graphic card (at least the maker), which sound does not work, and which chip set of what?

Also if I were you, I would ask about the sound in the Multimedia subforum (and please read the stickys first).

are you saying you have no sound or video?

well, if you look at the hardware compatibility list:
http://en.opensuse.org/HCL:Acer_laptops#Aspire_9xxx you will notice
that many of the Acer models have a lot more green check marks up and
down the page than do the 9xxx series…

now, i don’t know if that is because Acer built it with hardware that
is only useful with Redmond software (if so, you are out of luck), or
just you are the first on the block to try to use Linux on it…

in either event you might first need to know that in Linux we don’t
normally go around to a lot of different sites looking for software
like you had to with Redmond…instead we use a “package manager”
which connects directly to repositories, aka repos…

what exactly is wrong with your video and sound (have you turned up
the volume?)

I recommend you brush up on some openSUSE Linux Concepts (ie theory) : Concepts - openSUSE In particular note that free open source graphic drivers are often provided with openSUSE as kernel modules.

Sometimes superior proprietary drivers can be obtained for devices, and to a large extent the implementation method of those vary, dependent on the manufacturer.

As noted previous, if you want more specific help, you need to tell us EXACTLY what hardware is in your Acer Aspire 9410 … ie for graphics, Intel® Graphics Media Accelerator (GMA) 950 or NVIDIA® GeForce® Go 7300 ?

For sound, the alsa driver that comes with your PC should work. Does sound not work ? Please note our multimedia stickie: Welcome to multimedia sub-area

There should be no need for motherboard ‘chipset’ specific drivers (which may be a necessity in MS-Windows).
