Graphic Problems in OpenSuse 11.3

After installing Opensuse 11.3 i get massive graphical errors after reboot. Those errors directly start after the first resolution change after grub.
So i used nomodeset from now on and installed the drivers from nvidia.
After this X11 only flasht up very shortly and i got this logs:

So i googled and found a custom EDID workarround here: nV News Forums - View Single Post - G210m Blank Laptop Display

After applying this workaround, X11 stays running but with an empty Screen, but the Backround light is on. I have this Log now:

EDIT: Had to split up the Code into the next two replies, because it was to long, sorry!

Any ideas what to do next?

Oh by the way i get the same empty Screen when i start the Kubuntu installer… and under Windows everything works great… no Hardware issues!

For some reason i cannot edit my posts… i wanted to add, that the Computer i’m running on, is a HP Elitebook 8540w with a Quadro FX 1800m and a internal DreamColor display wich is attached via 10bit per channel.

If you have an external monitor, try plugging that in. If you get an image (you may have to reboot with the external monitor plugged in) then add the following to /etc/X11/xorg.conf in the Devices section

Option "ConnectedMonitor" "DFP-0"
Option "CustomEDID" "DFP-0: /proc/acpi/video/NGFX/LCD/EDID"

change the CustomEDID path to where your custom EDID is.

Thank you for your help, but i am still getting no picture from X11

I tried booting with a VGA display attached, with and without my and your custom EDID option. All options didn’t make any difference in the behavior.

And by the way:

I dont have the folder /proc/acpi/video/NGFX in Video i only have the folder DGFX wich has the folders: CRT DD04 DD05 DD06 DD07 DD08 DOS DVI info LCD post post-info ROM and TV in it.

Does this make a difference?

No, the /proc/ is just a place to store the file, my EDID is actually in my documents folder.
Can you boot into a terminal (init 3) or boot into Failsafe mode?
Did you custom install Nvidia drivers?

NVIDIA dlloader X Driver 260.19.29 Wed Dec 8 12:10:14 PST 2010

Have you tried switching to tty7: ctrl+alt+F7?

If you can get to a terminal, try to reconfigure x with nvidia-config.

TTY1 - 6 run nicely i can access the consoles.
On TTY7 there is the black screen i was talking about.

nvidia-config gives me an unknown command error

nvidia-settings says that the control display is undefined

The running nvidia driver was downloaded from the nvidia homepage and installed via the nvidia .run script. I already had tried a different installation with the nvidia packages by opensuse via yast2. the same symptoms as now occured then.

I know chose the manual installation method because in the nvidia description my quadro fx1800m was mentioned, in the opensuse description i did not find it explicitly named.

Ah, its nvidia-xconfig, sorry.

Did you follow these instructions?
Nvidia Installer HOWTO for openSUSE users

If you lost the nvidia*.run, you will have to download the drivers again on a separate computer carry them over via USB.

sudo mkdir /media/sdb1
sudo mount -t vfat /dev/sdb1 /media/sdb

Unmount:

sudo umount /media/sdb1

Yes i followed these steps exactly.

Now using nvidia-xconfig i got the message:

Validation Error
Data incolmplete in file “/etc/X11/xorg.conf”
Undefined Monitor “Monitor0” referenced by Screen “Screen0”

so i attached my external vga screen and restarted nvidia-xconfig wich now ran through without error messages, only confirming the new xorg configuration file.

Now after reboot, the external screen goes into standby and the internal screen is totally black without background light. switching to tty1 - 6 reactivates the internal screen and does show the consoles like before.

the log files show, that the external screen “vision master 450” is corectly detected and a resolution of 1600 x 1200 was chosen, wich my monitor should be capable of, but not at every frequency. How can i change the default resolution and frequency to be shure that this is not the point why the screen is going to standby?

Can you post your xorg.conf?

xorg.xonf is deprecated. Rather I suspect issues already mentioned in the forums with the 260* drivers. Download one of the 256* driver versions from the nvidia ftp site and try that. Remove any Xorg configs made so far, and see that the nouveau driver is blacklisted, and that KMS is disabled.

Hi,

Did you have some success already with this ?
I have the same problems, but then on a Ubuntu system, but that doesn’t really matter
If you’ve found a solution or a direction where to look I would like to know.

I have also a 8540w with a DreamColor 2 screen.

Before installing the proprietary nVidia driver, did you also select YES to disable loading of the DRM module in initrd per the recommendation in the openSUSE-11.3 release notes?
openSUSE Release Notes

and I quote:

Initializing Graphics with KMS (Kernel Mode Setting)

With openSUSE 11.3 we are switching to KMS (Kernel Mode Setting) for Intel, ATI and NVIDIA graphics, which now is our default. If you encounter problems with the KMS driver support (intel, radeon, nouveau), disable KMS by adding nomodeset to the kernel boot command line. To set this permanently, add it to the kernel command line in /boot/grub/menu.lst. This option makes sure the appropriate kernel module (intel, radeon, nouveau) is loaded with modeset=0 in initrd, i.e. KMS is disabled.

In the rare cases when loading the DRM module from initrd is a general problem and unrelated to KMS, it is even possible to disable loading of the DRM module in initrd completely. For this set the NO_KMS_IN_INITRD sysconfig variable to yes via YAST, which then recreates initrd afterwards. Reboot your machine.

On Intel without KMS the Xserver falls back to the fbdev driver (the intel driver only supports KMS). On ATI for current GPUs it falls back to radeonhd. On NVIDIA without KMS the nv driver is used (the nouveau driver only supports KMS).

Apologies if you stated that you did this, but when I skimmed thru the thread looking for such a reference I could NOT find it.

Hello again,

  • No I still had no success wit 256 drivers.
  • Yes I deactivated Kernel Mode Settings with Yast!
  • yes you can see my Conf Files

With EDID patch: resulting a Black Screen with Background lighting:

A silly question - again, I scrolled up and down in this thread and I could not find a definitive statement answering this question :

Did you try booting to X with no xorg.conf file in place ?

Oh sorry, I Had’nt already tried this but did now.
Same behaviour like with a xorg.conf without patched EDID information:

  • with external display connected -> External Display Standby, internal Display off
  • without external display connected -> no usable screen found error crashing to console

The logs changed a little bit… nouvou and nv driver are named again but not loading??

see the logs:

Rather than ‘edit’ the file, I recommend you post it to : SUSE Paste and then press ‘create’ and post here the URL/website address it provides. When one ‘edits’ there is always the risk one is editing important information.

You could also put the EDID information in the appropriate /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/ file (possibly 50-device.conf ? or is it 50-monitor.conf) and still have no Xorg.conf file,… and reboot and see if that works.

I’ve got right now a external monitor working via the DisplayPort with a DisplayPort tot DVI adapter.

The internal screen still doesn’t work.

PS. I don’t run OpenSUSE, but that shouldn’t matter anything regarding the X.Org system  My system is currently running Debian sid 64bit.

Output of the several files can be found on:
SUSE Paste

Unless DJravingMonkey turned into Priyantha_Bleeker, please don’t hi-jack threads.

Do you get a Nvidia logo at any point during the boot process?
