googleearth and kernel 3.15.1 problem?

yfi

undated kernel and kde on this laptop today, afterwards,
google-earth-stable-7.1.2.2041-0_x86_64.rpm failed to start

google-earth-stable-7.1.2.2041-0_i386.rpm installed and ran ok
but without photo’s or 360°

configuration
Host: hp-g7-2248sg.laptop3 Kernel: 3.14.4-1.gbebeb6f-desktop x86_64 (64 bit)

GLX Renderer: AMD Radeon HD 7640G GLX Version: 4.4.12874 - CPC 14.10.1006 Direct Rendering: Yes

after removal of proprietary driver,
google-earth-stable-7.1.2.2041-0_x86_64.rpm installed and ran ok
but without photo’s or 360°

after changes per ge7.1.1.1580-0.x86_64-new-qt-libs-openSUSE-12-3.txz,
photo’s available but no 360°

has anyone else noticed similar behaviour? is there a quick fix?

proprietary driver installed due to better graphics for tv viewing and lower
cpu temperatures

NB. no problems seen after similar sw update on PC’s with radeon drivers

Have you tried to re-install the fglrx driver after the kernel upgrade? This might be necessary.

I don’t know though whether the driver actually work with the latest kernel version 3.15.1. OTOH, the RPM packages and Sebastian Siebert’s script for the latest beta driver (the 14.10.1006 that you had installed according to your output) contain a patch for kernel 3.15, so I would think those should work with 3.15.1 as well.
Did you install it using those, or did you download it yourself?

hi wolfi323,

my understanding is, the fglrx driver is automatically re-installed after a kernel change when its installed from Sebastian Siebert’s repos

to check though, it was just re-installed from his repo and google-earth crashed on each attempt to start it

going back to the radeon driver, google-earth starts without problem

kernel 3.15.0 was only installed for a few days and there is no recollection if google-earth was used during this period

all the crash reports are available

cheers

Yes, that’s my understanding as well.
But you didn’t mention how you installed the driver…

to check though, it was just re-installed from his repo and google-earth crashed on each attempt to start it

Ok, then it should be no installation issue.
You might still check whether the driver works:

glxinfo | grep render

(you need “Mesa-demo-x” installed)

But it might have problems with kernel 3.15.1.

going back to the radeon driver, google-earth starts without problem

You might try to update the radeon driver to the latest version:
http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/X11:/XOrg/openSUSE_13.1
Please note that you should do a “Full Repository vendor change update” to that repo, see here:
https://en.opensuse.org/SDB:Vendor_change_update#Full_repository_Vendor_change

Maybe that one would work better?
Meanwhile it should even have better performance with certain cards than fglrx.

hi again,

thanks for your responses

with fglrx driver installed, it looks fine,

watching the process table googleearth-bin just goes into ‘deep sleep’

all of the installs have been done via -Yast --Repository tab and ‘Switch system packages’

will give the latest radeon driver a test later

the newer radeon driver appears to achieve a lower cpu temperature with kernel-13.5
so will stay with it until the next update

cheers

hi wolfi323

switched to the repos suggested and upgraded per instructions,
169 packages were updated/changed

google-earth is now fully functional with the new install

peak cpu temperature now is about +25°C above ambient,
before with the radeon driver it was about +40°C,
and with the amd driver about +35°C

the new driver is a FANTASTIC improvement

thanks for the tip, and thanks to all involved in the updated

cheers

Nice to hear!
