Google Earth Got Broken

It worked fine until suddenly it started giving this error

I think it’s one of the recent updates that broke it, I haven’t touched the drivers or anything, only updated kernel to 3.0 a few months ago but I think Google Earth was still working after that.

Any ideas what’s missing? I re-installed it and zypper didn’t throw any errors at all.

Internet isn’t helpful yet with Google Earth, on Ubuntu people recommended installing a bunch of libs but I have no idea which ones are needed for Suse.

Looks a bit like some problem with the graphics driver (maybe related to
your kernel update).
Can you post the output of

glxinfo | grep OpenGL

and tell us which graphics card you use?
What happens when you run glxgears?

I’ve got a laptop, Core i5 processor with Intel’s “Arrandale Integrated Graphics Controller”, according to Konqueror, and a separate nVidia card. I remember having lots of troubles with trying to force nVidia driver and gave up on it, leaving the system with whatever kernel wants to use itself.

Kernel 3.0 was installed from the source, not from Suse repos, and I noticed I lost virtualbox drivers even though neither zypper nor Yast show any broken dependencies. Should I try and upgrade to the latest Suse branded version, isn’t it 3.1 or something already? I’m still pretty sure that I used Google Earth after the update, though.

In fact that shows that you have no working opengl at all, so your setup for
the graphics card is obviously broken.
I am not familiar with the arrandale/nvidia so I can only guess, but
switching to the latest opensuse kernel sounds like a viable idea, thoug I
think that alone will for sure not solve your problem.
You may of course want to wait for someone who has experience with the
graphics card setup you have.

Do you remember what you had to do to make it work?
I guess your best option is to have the nvidia as primary graphics if you
can manage that somehow (BIOS option, installing nvidia driver the hard way

  • I am really only guessing here).

/sbin/lspci -nnk

should at least show you which VGA adapter is in use and with which kernel
driver.

I tried installing nVidia driver the hard way and it didn’t work, both before and after the kernel upgrade, so I uninstalled it and left whatever driver that came with the kernel.

This thread describes exactly what I did:

Unreliable boot with hdmi out

How does one go about installing the latest Suse branded kernel with all Suse bundled drivers? What repos to use? I once tried updating to 3.1 and there were way too many dependency problems that required manual interventions about packages I have no idea about.

So it seems you are using now the intel with i915 driver.
The nvidia VGA shows no kernel driver at all which is used.
To be sure examine what yast -> hardware shows now and examine the xorg log
file what is loaded during X startup.

About the 3.x kernels, there are special kernel repos like the stable one
http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/Kernel:/stable/standard
which has 3.0.6 as far as I can see, but that’s now far outside my comfort
zone since until now I never had to use that.

Does it mean that the system wants to use nVidia driver for GLX or OpenGL, whatever it’s called, but the driver is unavailable and otherwise not needed. Maybe all I have to do is to force Intel driver instead. How?

It really looks as if it tries to load the nvidia and fails, then falls back
to something else.
Looking at nvidia.com it shows driver version 285.05.09 for your 330M. I
would try to install that the hard way (it is anyway not available as rpm
and of course not for your kernel) and make sure that nothing nvidia related
is installed via rpm.
Since yast/zypper/rpm do not know about your kernel 3.x (as far as I
understood you installed that outside the package management system) the
system still asumes you have a 2.6.x kernel and handles all kernel modules
related to that. So I am not surprised if it cannot load the module.
Ceck with

rpm -qa '*nvidia*'

that there is really nothing.

Before trying hard way install again I think I should consider updating the kernel and telling Yast/zypper about it, that should take care of OpenGL, right? Maybe I should boot into the old 2.6 and update from there. I need to get virtualbox to work, too, and for that I need a Suse kernel anyway.
It should be kernel first, drivers later, right?

In the meantime, what if I remove that last “x11-video-nvidiaG02-275.21-7.1.x86_64”? Will it break my system? From what I remember, it didn’t start X without working Intel driver when I tried to install it last time. I also thought that Intel’s installation package is meant to remove their driver as well, why do I still see some rpms that are not part for the kernel?

This rpm’s are completely useless for you as long as you boot into the 3.x
kernel, as you can easily see from the kernel version they are made for

No it will and it can not, simply because there are no precompiled nvidia
drivers for the kernel 3 versions. Just have a look at
ftp://download.nvidia.com/opensuse/11.4/

That will make no difference, the rpm system looks at what is installed not
what is running at the moment.

No, you don’t need a kernel which is installed via rpm, but you need the
kernel headers and sources of course to be able to compile the vbox kernel
modules.

Yes.

It will not break anything since this packages do anyway not work with what
you have.

I am not sure if I understand what you refer to here. Which rpm’s exactly do
you mean here?

Just at the end the major question: What was exactly the reason why you need
kernel 3 instead of the standard kernel 2.6.37 which comes with 11.4?

I assumed that x11-video-nvidiaG02-275.21-7.1.x86_64 was installed by “NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-275.21.run” file that I still have in my Downloads, same for nvidia-computeG02-275.21-7.1.x86_64.

As far as I remember nVidia never worked on this laptop but Google Earth did, and now it doesn’t. It worked with the new kernel, too, I just checked the dates of some research I was doing, it was a few weeks after the kernel upgrade.

I installed kernel 3.0 because with 2.6 half the time the system wouldn’t boot into anything if HDMI is attached. Newer kernel fixed that problem.

Nothing you see with the rpm command is installed by the nvidia .run file.
What is installed by that is invisible to the package system.
Most likely some update pulled in this packages since the update process
thinks you use the kernel which is installed by the package system.

Not even if you tell xorg explicitly that you want to use the nvidia by
creating a xorg.conf for it with the binary nvidia installer?

So something in the system changed, you can check with

rpm -qa --last > installed_rpms_by_date.txt

and inspect was has been installed after your kernel update and compare the
dates with the date when googleearth did no longer work.

Ok, so all comes back to make the intel graphics work with kernel 3.

What about simply using the S.A.K.C. script to update your kernel again and
recompile the corresponding kernel modules?
There is an rpm packaged for it.
http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/home:/l1zard/openSUSE_11.4/noarch/sakc-2.50-3.1.noarch.rpm
Or search for the script in the forum, I do not have now the link to it at

“xrpm -qa --last > installed_rpms_by_date.txt” - What should I be looking for? What could possibly affect OpenGL? What is it exactly that is not working? The only thing I suspect is libglib but it was installed/updated so long ago I can’t be sure it broke my Google Earth.

When I run Google Earth or glxgears now I only see “GLX” errors but there’s nothing about it in the rpm log.

I actually used SAKC to update the kernel, that’s how I lost virtualbox drivers, I want them back, I want Suse kernel with everything that should be there.

nVidia never worked in the sense that if I installed their driver the system wouldn’t start X at all.

As a quick fix, how to force “GLX” to use Intel driver instead of nVidia?

This is the rpm history as far as it could go and keep the post within 1500 word limit. I think GE worked during this time. I updated the kernel a month and a half before that and definitely used GE about two weeks before the log cut off point.

You see that was installed some weeks ago.
Remove all the nvidia packages then look if there is a xorg.conf which
somehow refers to nvidia in it and if so remove that as well, then reboot
and check if everything works as before. And tabu the nvidia packages in
yast!
If you are using kpackagekit, do no longer use it, it will pull in the
nvidia packages again even if you tabu them in yast.
About virtual box open a new thread.

Just to summarize:
You have exactly two options

  1. use the kernel that comes with 11.4 if you want and need automatic
handling of the kernel modules and accept the hdmi problem until finaly 12.1
    is available
  2. or if you use anything else (kernel 3) be it self compiled or packaged as
rpm you have to take care about everything which needs a kernel module (like
vbox) yourself, the only benefit in having it installed as rpm and the
original kernel rpms removed is that it blocks accidential updates of
packages which refer to the wrong kernel.

so at the end you have to decide if the hdmi problem is worth all the
trouble which you have by running a kernel which is not part of a standard
11.4 installation.

The only other option I see is to try if a different distro handles your
graphics and hdmi better sometimes this can be simply the case, but this is
try and error (you can use live cd’s to check this).

If you consider to check if that is an option, this is the result of the
corrsponding distrowatch search for distros which support kernel 3.0 right
now

Well, removed nvidia packages via Yast, tabooed them, there’s no xorg.conf to tweak, Google Earth is back after the reboot. Should have listened to you on the first page. Thanks for helping me with this.

KPackageKit so far hasn’t picked them up as missing and needing an update.

Vbox and kernel drivers are not for this thread, I’ll open a new one as soon as I’m ready. Thanks again.

Glad you had a partial success.

For vbox I cannot help much with kernel 3 but there are very clever people
on this list, it should not be too difficult.
So if it breaks again you know what you have to do (remove the offending
packages).

And by the way don’t take my recommodation for other distros as offense, I
just thought if you have no luck at all with your configuration look at
something where kernel 3 is already supported.
Soon we have it also when 12.1 is released and I think your best choice is
to update when it is officially available.

Hy All of you,

I’m a french user of OS11.4 under Dell XPS with an nVidia 550M card.
It’s a big issue for me that the HDMI isn’t recognized.
So I dig in this problem and it seems that the responsible is the optimus function that is coming with the nvidia products and manage 2 cards installations.
One of the solutions I found is to use bumblebee : https://github.com/Bumblebee-Project/Bumblebee which has an official osb : Index of /repositories/home:/Bumblebee-Project:

Before yesterday night, I succeed in both having 3D effects on my laptop with the default card (intel’s one) and having effects through the nVidia card thanks to the optirun command.
Yesterday I accepted an update that changed something on the kernel (the most obvious thing is that all my grub entries have the nomodeset option).
From now, I still have an optirun that can handle glxgears, glxspheres, and so on but I have the same problem with the default card :

glxspheres

If I use the optirun glxinfo command, everything works fine.

Hope it can help.

What if you simply remove that option? Does it work better?
In general I think you should open your ow n thread with a good title
(mention optimus your kernel/opensuse version in the title) instead of
answering to an old one since almost no one will look into a thread about
google earth to answer your general optimus problem
