Google Chrome seems to be deteriorating

I have been using Chrome and/or Google Chrome for some time now. It is my preferred browser. But it seems to be deteriorating.

I get lots of flash player crashes; an issue that seemed to be resolved for a while.

Chrome (from the google repo) crashes when I try to upload a file. If I search for a file in Dolphin, all I have to do is click on the directory with pics in it and Dolphin crashes taking Chrome down with it. (maybe its the other way around, but they both crash together.) I have no issues with Firefox uploading the same files to the same sites (mostly picasa) using the same method.

I’ve been complaining (to myself) about how hard it is to search the forums. I want the latest posts from just the forums I subscribe to. It takes 6 or 8 clicks to get that. Each time I tried to save the search parameters in Chrome, nothing happened and I blamed the forum software. Once, when in Firefox, I noticed something under the dialog box for save searches. It was like the top quarter of a box. Suspecting it might be a save button, I clicked it. Sure enough, it saved my search (not all of it, just the part about searching new posts). It was partly hidden in FF and completely hidden in Chrome.

Finally, I can no longer populate the New Tab page with the urls that I want.

I’m running 11.3 and KDE 4.5.2 if that makes any difference. Anybody else see Chrome deteriorating?

Not here…

Hey
I wonder if it’s anything to do with kde rather than chrome?
You know you were asking about the Updated Apps/(Backports). I gave you some info on.
Let me say I never did use Backports and don’t use Updated apps. Is it worth dropping it and using the switch on 45 to bring stuff back
(Watch out for the few apps you might want to keep as Packman)

No issues with the latest version of Chrome for me but I am running Gnome and not KDE. One thought on flash, are you running the 64 bit version of OpenSUSE? If so, try using the 64 bit version of Flash from Adobe rather then the 32 bit version wrapped in ndiswrapper, I found the 64 bit version to be quite a bit more stable.

Using 32 bit openSUSE. I don’t remember why I didn’t use the version from the Adobe site.

I will drop the Updated KDE repo to see if things get better. Although, would that explain why Firefox performed differently?

It was this comment that brought my recommendation:

I’m not convinced it’s anything to do with KDE, but taking the Updated apps out at least will answer the question. It’s easy enough to add them back later if you find them necessary.
What are the specs of your system here? Because I have none of the issues you describe. I was beginning to wonder if you are using a netbook.

Have been chromium (not Chrome) with KDE for ages and had no problems at all.

Switch to a newreader and use nntp…problem solved.

Running 11.3 and KDE 4.5.2 with 2 GB ram. My video card is an nvidia 7600 GS with the nvidia 256.53 driver.

I closed out the KDE Updated Apps repo and ran the update in yast with only the KDE 4.5 stable repo. There were 1/2 GB of updates! I normally run zypper up every day, so this must have been switched packages. Almost all were blue. Will test the changes shortly.

Sounds like you weren’t using what you thought.
Adding a repo with newer packages and do zypper up will not switch to the newer repo, you need to use the Yast package switch or use zypper dup on that repo
Eg: zypper dup -r kde45 (where kde45 is the repo alias)
or you can do it by number
Eg: zypper dup -r 1 (where 1 is the number of kde45 repo)

Yes. I did do the switch in yast. So, (almost) everything should be out of the 4.5 stable repo. There were a couple of apps in red.

Unfortunately, that did not fix the problem. Just tried to upload a pic and both chrome and dolphin crashed. Firefox works fine. This was to upload to twitter. I uploaded to Picasa with FF and that worked too.

So, back to my original question.

Can you tell us the exact package name you have for Chrome? I’m using
chromium-8.0.551.0-3.1.x86_64
chromium-libs-8.0.551.0-3.1.x86_64
from this repo:

Index of /repositories/openSUSE:/11.3:/Contrib/standard

I have google-chrome-stable from the google repo. It is version 6.0.472.63-59945. There doesn’t appear to be a library to go with it. I also dropped the Contrib repo when I installed 11.3.

I do not have chromium installed any longer.

I re-installed chromium. It was hard to find. I had to come back to Knurpht’s post to find it. Webpin found nothing even close. Also, it doesn’t appear in my menu. I search for it and it comes up with no icon, just the underlying text. But clicking it works.

More to the point, it doesn’t crash when I try to upload a pic. Thanks for the tip.
