good server for $500 or less that uses low power?

I’m looking for something to make into a server that will run openvpn, a local dns, git and files. does anyone have recommendations?

Grab a cheap router with a USB port on it, put openWRT on it with the
necessary software installed.

Looks like all of it, including git, is available.

Second possibility that’s fairly inexpensive if you have sufficient
horsepower on your desktop is to run a headless VirtualBox VM.

Otherwise, pretty much any old system with a supported network card
should do the trick - a server doesn’t need a fancy video card or
anything, so as long as the NIC is supported, you should be fine.
