Hi every1,
Well after a few weeks on OpenSUSE I can say: I will not go back to Windows! It took some time to take the leap and I had some issues starting out, but I found help on the forum and I got everything under control (mostly).
I had been delaying the move to Linux for years. I had tried (old) versions of Suse (before it was Open), Redhat, Mandrake and recently Debian, I’ve run the Ubuntu live CD and Knoppix a few times and though I found no issues with them I decided on openSUSE because:
- I like Novell. Liked it since I started out in the IT business and learned how flexible Netware with ZEN was.
- The only other person I know who uses Linux on his desktop for personal use uses OpenSUSE and likes it, and he gives me tips.
- iSeries (system i/5, as/400 or whatever IBM is calling them this month) systems support Suse
- My company has some SAP systems running on Linux and most of them use Suse.
- But mostly because this is the one that “stuck” on my PC.
I have bought an Asus eeepc 900 last week and also installed opensuse 11 on there. Works like it should.
I’m happy with opensuse. I don’t like the way Windows is headed. It’s a toybox with more focus on the way it looks than on the way it works. Vista is an inefficient cluttered mess. My wife has it on her laptop (an overpriced Sony thing that came preconfigured with it and a load of other stuff I wouldn’t want for myself) and likes it for the same reason I don’t - too much fluff.
Oops didn’t mean to end on a Windows-rant, it wouldn’t be THAT bad if you could just leave out all the unneccessary add-ons (or uninstall them later).
But I’m loving openSUSE, and already looking forward to 11.1! I’m having a lot of fun.
