Hello people. i am a fresh open suse user. so far i must say i am impressed. it actually makes me question why ubuntu is more popular.
speaking of ubuntu. i just happened to have migrated to suse
as a new suse user Greetings!
What would you recommend a new suse user. whom has migrated from ubuntu? must have apps and modules etc.
Warm welcome to the green side of GNU/Linux. I’m also one of the users that started out with Ubuntu, but then made my way through many distros. openSUSE has put an end to my distrohopping madness
As for the programs, i’m a casual desktop/laptop user, so i use mostly KDE, and on it, mostly VLC and Amarok (best music player out there, hands down! :D)
Anyway, welcome, you’re just in time for the release fever that’s about to go on in the coming month
I think the reason why Ubuntu is so popular is that it became available when SUSE was still a single distribution with an enterprise focus and Ubuntu managed to grab a lot of mindshare at the time. If you are a new user, you are more likely to know another Ubuntu (or Linux Mint) user than an openSUSE user (in my LUG I am the only openSUSE user).
Until relatively recently, the Build Service contained significantly fewer packages than Debian (and therefore Ubuntu). There are still a lot more Debian packages but my impression is that you are far less likely to have to install a source package now than you were when openSUSE was originally floated off - just as Ubuntu was storming ahead.
I also think that you need a bit of experience of Linux to understand where openSUSE scores over other distros. I was interested when doing the Introduction to Linux course that several of the explanations appeared to be aimed at Ubuntu users who would not know things which a Centos or openSUSE user would know.
